Rosewood matmen seize two non-conference victories

WILSON -- Rosewood notched seven falls and one technical fall during a non-conference, tri-match sweep of Nash Central and host Wilson Beddingfield on Thursday evening.

The Eagles (27-7 overall) managed just three individual victories against Nash Central, but benefited from five forfeits in a 47-33 decision. In the nightcap, the Eagles parlayed five falls and seven forfeits into a 72-6 rout of the short-handed Bruins.

Jim Bish (119 pounds) and Chris Hare (130) each pinned their respective opponent, while Chris Hare (125) posted a technical fall. Teammates Josh Holmes (135), Scott Pate (140), Vontarius Kornegay (171), Chris Holmes (189) and J.P. Person (215) each drew a forfeit.

Nash Central won five individual matches and picked up one forfeit.

Baker, Hare, Scott Mason (145), Kornegay (171) and Chris Holmes each provided a pin against Beddingfield. Josh Holmes (135), Byron Cavenaugh (152), Andrew Sass (160), Person (215), heavyweight Trevor Morris, Olivia Neal (112) and Bish each collected a forfeit.

Rosewood concludes the dual-team portion of its schedule today at Clinton.

Princeton girls

claim championship

Princeton sophomore Jania Bogle emerged with three individual titles and ran the anchor leg on the winning 1,600-meter relay, and helped the Bulldog girls seize the Class 1-A Carolina Conference indoor track and field championship.

Bogle posted a winning distance of 13 feet, 5 inches in the high jump. She ran a blistering 7.5 seconds in the 55-meter dash, and 47.4 seconds in the 300-meter dash. The Bulldog quartet of Bogle, Christi Mileski, Cierra Manuel and Courtney Yancey recorded a meet-winning time of 6:01 in the 1,600 relay.

Manuel claimed the high jump title, while Mileski won the triple jump and 500-meter event. Yancey finished as the top 1,000-meter runner with a time of 4:09.

Rosewood's Jamie Andrews picked up a pair of victories -- 1,600 and 3,200 runs. Andrews also participated in the winning 3,200 relay team that included Francesca Verceles-Zara, Ashley Shaw and Amber Adams. Adams ran the anchor leg.

Spring Creek's individual champions were Chadaya Hicks (shot put) and Kristy Flow (55 hurdles).

Overall, Princeton captured first place in eight of 13 contested events and accumulated 62 points. Rosewood edged North Johnston 45-42 for runner-up honors. Spring Creek also participated, but did not have enough competitors to field a team score.

Norwayne girls 32, Dillard 29 -- Ivey Hartzell pumped in 13 points for the Cobras, while Brooke Bell provided seven points. Imari Howell contributed six points. Kendra McDaniel paced the Tigers with eight points. Norwayne improved to 10-1 overall and 5-1 against Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I foes. Dillard (8-3 overall) fell to 4-2 in Division I play. The Cobras travel to Grantham on Monday.

Eastern Wayne girls 34, Mount Olive 32 -- Tierra Smith buried three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points for the Warriors. Maurriel Baker added 10 points and Jasmine Benjamin knocked down five points, including a 3-pointer. Paulette Spivey poured in a game-high 17 points for the Trojans. Eastern Wayne (9-3 overall) entertains Rosewood on Feb. 1.

Spring Creek boys 33, Brogden 32 -- Ethan Potter led the Gators with 12 points, while Noah Hinson chipped in eight points. Spring Creek entertains Greenwood on Monday.

Eastern Wayne boys 52, Mount Olive 38 -- Joshua Gregory delivered a game-high 16 points for the unbeaten Warriors. Lamar Best contributed 10 points, six steals and four assists. Jonathan Midgette tallied 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. Carlos Council and Lyndell Wiggins paced the Trojans with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Eastern Wayne (12-0 overall) entertains Rosewood on Feb. 1. Mount Olive dropped to 8-4 overall.
