NCADA to induct Whitfield

CHAPEL HILL -- Former American Legion Post 11 baseball manager Doyle Whitfield will be inducted into the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame.

Joining Whitfield are Harold Robinson of Williamston and Ralph Holloway of Kinston. The trio comprises the 13th class, which will be recognized at the NCADA state conference March 27 in Wilmington.

Whitfield, who is a member of the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame, served as head baseball coach and athletic director at Southern Wayne. He recorded more than 400 victories and guided the Saints to the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 4-A title in 1985.

Southern Wayne collected four Mideastern Conference championships during that stretch. Doyle earned Mideastern Conference coach of the year accolades on six occasions.

The school's athletic complex has been named in his honor.

Whitfield is the third Wayne County AD to receive induction into the Hall. George Whitfield, who started his baseball career in Goldsboro, was inducted in 1999. Dave Thomas, the former Wayne County athletic director, comprised part of the 2004 class.

The NCADA Hall of Fame has been established to recognize achievement and excellence for athletic administration. The inductees are honored at the NCADA's annual state convention, and a permanent display honoring the athletic directors' Hall of Fame is located in the offices of the NCHSAA in Chapel Hill.

There are 58 members in the Hall.
