Warrior swim teams fair well at meet

Eastern Wayne's Mason Chenier and Melvin Shipman emerged double winners, and Charles B. Aycock's girls dominated the relays in a seven-team meet contested Tuesday evening at the Goldsboro Family Y pool.

Chenier, a senior, touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly (56.38 seconds) and 50 free (22.93). Shipman seized top honors in the 200 IM (2:21.01) and 100 backstroke (1:02.69).

Chenier and Shipman also participated on two winning relay teams -- the 200 medley and 400 free. Joining them were Xander Robinson and Spenser Rouse. Robinson also claimed the 500 free in 5:37.56.

The Warriors edged South Brunswick 516-469 for team supremacy.

Southern Wayne's Joseph Otellio collected third-place times in the 200 free (2:26.35) and 100 free (1:04.44). Teammate Beau Saleska ended up fifth in 2:39.51, while Aycock's Chris Bandy and Ryan Martin took seventh and eighth, respectively.

The Saints' Corey Overman touched the wall less than one second behind Otellio to finish fourth in the 100 free. Teammate Phil Howell captured fourth overall in the 50 free (26.13), while Aycock's Jackson Wooten grabbed seventh place in 28.22. Fellow Golden Falcons Johnny Tsui and Gavin Forrest placed second and fourth, respectively, in the 100 fly.

Eastern Wayne, Southern Wayne and C.B. Aycock placed second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 free relay behind meet winner South Brunswick. The Warriors' quartet was Rouse, Ryan Klinkicht, Marcus Corbett and Eric Gross. Competing for the Saints were Overman, Howell, Josh Chappell and Otellio. Aycock's foursome was Forrest, Wooten, Tsui and Kenan Stewart.

Howell was third in the 100 backstroke.

Tsui ended up fifth overall in the 100 breaststroke behind South Brunswick's Kevin Sullivan and three Warriors -- Robinson, Dustin Rhodes and Klinkicht.

On the girls' side, Aycock captured the 200 free and 400 free relays. Garrett Forrest, Sarah Macut, Carrigan Chastain and Margaret Connolly comprised each relay. Forrest completed the anchor leg on the 400 free in 56.96 seconds and also posted a first-place time of 27.03 seconds in the 50 free.

Chastain prevailed in the 500 free.

Eastern Wayne won the 200 medley relay with Ashleigh Deal, Ashley Robinson, Bailey Upchurch and Regan Stoneburner. Stoneburner swam the anchor in 28.58 seconds. County rivals C.B. Aycock and Southern Wayne took second and third, respectively.

Upchurch claimed a pair of individual wins in the 100 fly (1:06.19) and 100 breaststroke (1:17.42). She helped the Warriors finish second behind South Brunswick in the team chase.

Teammates Courtney Garland and Jennifer Talton picked up third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 free. Southern Wayne's Michelle Joyner was fifth, followed by Aycock's Amanda Wilkinson.

The Saints' Heather Price and the Golden Falcons' Lauren McAuliffe finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 fly. Southern Wayne's Jeni Kominski and Katie Kendall grabbed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100 backstroke. Teammate Grete Majerle was second in the 100 breaststroke.
