C.B. Aycock matmen hammer Wilson Beddingfield

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock remained unbeaten in 11 outings with a 77-6 thrashing of Wilson Beddingfield on the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference wrestling scene Tuesday evening.

The Golden Falcons owned an 18-2 advantage in takedowns and prevailed in nine of the 10 contested matches.

"There was some concern that the long break would cause us to look a little rusty tonight," said Aycock coach Kevin Smith. "We really won this dual on our feet tonight. We did a super job of securing that initial takedown.

"It's that time of year where we start spending a greater proportion of practice on our feet. It was good to see the added time translate into a solid performance from the neutral position tonight."

Aycock, which collected its 11th consecutive ECC victory, seized a 17-0 lead after the first three individual matches. Nick Bentley (103 pounds) and Josh Pulley (112) each drew a forfeit, while Drake Gurley posted a 21-6 technical fall at 119 pounds.

The Bruins triumphed at 125, but enjoyed little success the remainder of the evening en route to their sixth consecutive ECC defeat.

Ngu Tran (130), Kevin Carmel (135), Ronald Lynn (140) and Bryant Lancaster (145) each notched a first-period fall. Josh Overton picked up a forfeit at 152 and Josh Grimes needed just 59 seconds to pin his opponent.

Steve Bentley (171), Kyle Harmon (189) and heavyweight Khiry Reid each recorded a fall. Jarrett Covar claimed a forfeit at 215.

"We are getting closer and closer to being able to field what we think is our best dual lineup," said Smith. "Hopefully, we will finally get that lineup on the mat by next week. At this point, we just need to get everyone healthy and in great shape for the home stretch of the season."

Aycock returns to action Saturday in the annual Terry Pilkington Duals.
