Rosewood matmen tune up for Eagle Invitational with victory over Greene Central

SNOW HILL -- The Rosewood High wrestling team emerged victorious in13 of 14 contested matches and dumped Greene Central 78-6 in non-conference play.

The Eagles recorded 12 falls and one forfeit, and exited 2-0 overall. They continue action Saturday in the 11th installment of the Eagle Invitational, which is Wayne County's longest-running individual tournament.

Eight Rosewood grapplers pinned their respective opponent in the opening period. Scott Pate (140) and T.J. Sprinkle (160) each needed just 48 seconds of mat time. Olivia Neal (103) posted the next-fastest pin (1:03) against the Rams' Tyler Cook.

Andy Seamen (112), Luke Davis (119), J.D. Hare (125), Josh Holmes (135), Byron Cavenaugh (145), Andrew Sass (152), Vontravious King (171), Chris Holmes (189) and heavyweight Trevor Morris also won by fall.

Chris Hare collected a forfeit at 130 pounds.

Tavare Shaw (215) claimed the Rams' lone individual win.

Greene Central fell to 2-4 overall.

South Central

nips E. Wayne

WINTERVILLE -- D.J. Cowan led three Eastern Wayne players with 17 points in a 61-57, non-conference loss at South Central on Thursday evening.

Lamar Davis added 15 points for the Warriors, who slipped to 1-5 overall heading into today's game at North Lenoir. Will White contributed 10 points.

"The fourth quarter is where it sort of got away from us," said Eastern Wayne coach Marvin Bowman. "We missed a few free throws here and there, and a couple of baskets that could have easily helped us win the ball game."

South Central (3-2) pecked away at a 10-point halftime deficit and eventually took the lead in the final quarter. The Falcons, of the Classes 3-A/4-A Coastal Conference, outscored the Warriors 41-27 in the second half.

Quan Nobles paced South Central with a game-high 24 points. Leland Jones chipped in 10.

Rosewood still

seeking first win

KINSTON -- Holt Rains posted the lone double-figure scoring performance of the night with 10 points in Rosewood's 61-38, non-conference loss at Arendell-Parrott Academy.

Dennis Jones and Stephen McIntyre each scored eight points for the Eagles, who fell to 0-2 overall.

Tate Mooring led three Parrott players in double figures with 14 points. Andy Patterson tallied 13 and Tillman Sneed knocked down 10.

Rosewood is the guest of Midway today, while Parrott Academy (3-3) entertains Village Christian of Fayetteville.

Unbeaten Falcons

soar past Warriors

WINTERVILLE -- Brittanni Billups paced Eastern Wayne's attack with 12 points in a 67-36, non-conference loss at unbeaten South Central on Thursday evening.

Yasmine Washington added seven points for the Warriors, who had their modest two-game win streak snapped. Zhanea Charles added four points.

Reece Moore led three Falcons in double figures with 16 points. Emily Perkins added 15 and Kelsey McCorkle pumped in 11.

South Central improved to 5-0 overall.

Eastern Wayne (2-4) travels to North Lenoir today.

Parrott Academy

drains 3-pointers

KINSTON -- Arendell-Parrott Academy buried eight 3-pointers and turned back Rosewood 54-50 in non-conference action Thursday evening.

The Patriots trailed 32-19 at halftime, but gained momentum with a 21-4 outburst in the third quarter. Each team collected 14 points in the final eight minutes of play.

Rebecca Hill led Parrott with a game-high 30 points, while Julia Rawls scored 12.

Courtney Hill and Shanita Monroe picked up 19 and 14 points, respectively, for the Eagles.

Rosewood (0-2) visits Midway today.

Spring Creek

falls to Blue Devils

DEEP RUN -- Shaquita Brooks and Melanique Deveaux each collected seven points in Spring Creek's 53-26, non-conference loss against South Lenoir at Munn Gymnasium.

Deveaux, who fouled out, also recorded two assists, two steals and 10 rebounds. Brooks pulled down six rebounds and hit the Gators' lone 3-pointer.

Seven players scratched in the scoring column for Spring Creek, which is the guest of James Kenan today.

Aycock collects

first win of year

PIKEVILLE -- Kyle LaFlamme led three players in double figures with 20 points as C.B. Aycock edged county rival Goldsboro 56-54 on Wednesday afternoon.

Antwan Hagins added 12 points and Tucker Pearson contributed 11 for the Golden Falcons, who improved to 1-7 overall.

Tyquan Sprangle led Goldsboro (1-4) with 17 points. Jakkar Pettaway tallied 14.

The teams play again today at Goldsboro. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Warriors drop

heartbreaker

Tiara McIntyre poured in 14 points as Eastern Wayne endured a heartbreaking 46-45, non-conference loss against South Central on Thursday afternoon.

Tia Jones added 11 points and Alta Black contributed nine.

Eastern Wayne entertains North Lenoir today.

Middle schools

Greenwood girls 41, Rosewood 16 -- Shamora Worrell poured in a game-high 18 points for the T-Birds. Janiele Daniels provided 12, while Sara Marquis contributed six. Denise Coley emerged the defensive standout. Greenwood (3-0) improved to 2-0 against Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I opposition. The T-Birds play host to Spring Creek on Dec. 16.

Eastern Wayne boys 65, Mount Olive 44 -- The unbeaten Warriors handed the Trojans their first loss of the season. Jonathan Midgette provided 22 points, six steals and six rebounds. Josh Gregory added 14 points. Lamar Best and Jamal Broadie chipped in 10 points apiece. Eastern Wayne (3-0) entertains Dillard next Monday.

Wayne Country Day boys 44, St. Mary's 26 -- Russell Turner and Johnny Gallman each scored 12 points apiece for the Chargers. Hil Tanner added seven for WCDS, which evened its record at 2-2 overall.
