C.B. Aycock girls snap seven-game skid

PIKEVILLE -- As the final buzzer sounded, a Charles B. Aycock fan screamed out "it's about time," echoing the sentiments from all the members of the Falcons' team.

The Aycock girls had just picked up win No. 1 of the season by defeating Goldsboro 60-34 on Wednesday night.

"We thought (our first win) was going to come after North Lenoir on Friday," said Aycock coach Carrie Reynell referring to her team's 71-68 overtime loss. "North Lenoir was right there, we just didn't finish them off."

Against Goldsboro, the Falcons finished off the Cougars early, removing any doubt in the outcome.

Jazzmine Lee led the Aycock attack, scoring a game-high 18 points.

"Jazzmine has been playing really well the last three or four games," said Reynell. "She's probably playing the best I've ever seen of her. Very under control, within her limits and not trying to do too much."

Bridgette Briggs was strong in the paint, scoring 14 points for the Falcons (1-7) all while getting plenty of good looks against the smaller Cougars.

Goldsboro (0-5) was led by Danielle Irby who tallied 11 points and Victoria Williams who added 10.

The Falcons started quick out of the gate to a 9-0 first-quarter lead. Goldsboro struggled to find any good looks as they didn't scratch the scoreboard until Williams' lay-up with 3:53 to play in the quarter.

"We couldn't find the hole," said Goldsboro coach Brandy Smith. "It didn't look like we were trying to find the hole either. We backed off and didn't attack the basket."

The Aycock man-to-man defense held Goldsboro to just two points in the second quarter, including going scoreless for the final 4:38, enabling the Falcons to go into the locker room up 24-13 at the half.

In the third quarter the Falcons got scorching hot shooting the ball.

Aycock opened with a 10-2 run at the start of the quarter to build their lead to 34-15. Later, the Falcons followed that up with an 11-2 spurt to push their lead to 26 at 47-21.

"I tried to encourage them to make basketball easy and work the ball -- go inside and out to get the easy stuff," said Reynell.

The "easy stuff" translated into a 25-point third quarter and a 49-24 lead for Aycock.

"I was a little concerned about our effort, but it can be fixed," said Smith

The Falcons coasted the rest of the way for their first victory and kept Goldsboro still searching for their first win.

"It feels good to finally get over the hump," said Reynell. "We've been working hard the last few weeks and it was nice to get that first win under our belts. We still have plenty of work to do, though."

In game two, the Goldsboro boys didn't play pretty, but had enough to move their win streak to five by defeating the Falcons 80-60.

"We did enough to win the game," said Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan whose team committed 28 turnovers for the game. "It was ugly. Give all the credit to Aycock. They played hard, were scrappy, they never stopped playing for 32 minutes.

Our talent won the game for us, not our basketball skills."

Tim Kornegay scored a game-high 21 points and Eric McLean added 19 with four three-pointers to lead the Cougars (5-1). Tim Hobbs stepped up in the low post in the absence of Daquan Joyner, who was out for undisclosed reasons, scoring 13 points.

"Tim Hobbs is getting better everyday," said Jordan. "One of the things that helps Tim is that he's going against a top-100 player every day (in practice) in Daquan Joyner. He's getting better. He's getting more confident."

Aycock (0-8), who was forced to play the game without Jonathan Williams who sprained an ankle in pre-game shoot around, was led by Quantay Poole who had 10 points and Jovaneta Taylor who added nine.

Goldsboro jumped out to a 26-14 first-quarter lead and then led 37-25 at halftime.

In the second half, Aycock made Goldsboro begin to sweat over the outcome.

After a basket by Kornegay, the Cougars would go scoreless for the next four minutes of the third quarter. During that span, the Falcons went on a 10-0 run to pull to within 45-40.

"We didn't quit," said Aycock coach David West. "We kept coming back."

Aycock had a chance to get even closer, but missed their next three shots.

"It just didn't go our way and it was because (Goldsboro) forced it to not go our way," said West.

The Cougars kicked it in gear for the last two minutes of the quarter, going on a 11-1 run to push the lead back to 15 at 56-41.

Aycock would get no closer then 13 the rest of the night.

"When Goldsboro kicks it up one notch we have to kick it up two, or sometimes three," said West.

The loss keeps the Falcons searching for that elusive first win.

"All of the kids worked real hard," said West. "We'll come around. We're going to get somebody."
