SMITHFIELD -- Goldsboro High forced 31 turnovers defensively and dominated the boards in a 54-42, non-conference victory over Smithfield-Selma on Tuesday evening.

The Cougars, who improved to 2-1 overall, grabbed a 42-31 edge on the glass and built a double-digit lead after three quarters. Each team tallied nine points in the final eight minutes of play.

"We did a great job defensively in the second half," said Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan. "(Burnie) Best was outstanding on both ends of the floor. We got contributions from a lot of people."

Best emerged the Cougars' top scorer with 15 points.

Goldsboro entertains county rival Southern Wayne on Friday.

Golden Falcons

fall at Clayton

CLAYTON -- Michael King led three Charles B. Aycock players in double figures with 12 points in a 62-57, non-conference loss Tuesday evening at Clayton.

The Comets won the previous meeting 71-27.

"What an improvement," said Aycock coach David West, referring to last week's 44-point defeat. "We really limited our turnovers and we were very, very pleased with the way we have improved."

Jacob Pendleton and Johnathan Williams collected 10 points apiece for the Golden Falcons, who committed just 17 turnovers in the 32-minute contest. Williams grabbed seven rebounds, while point guard David Gurganus and Jordan Raleigh each dished out three assists.

Evan Medford added eight points and Qwantay Poole contributed six.

C.B. Aycock (0-4) is the guest of Wilson Fike today.

Eastern Wayne

suffers road loss

JACKSONVILLE -- D.J. Cowan pumped in a game-high 19 points in Eastern Wayne's 69-63, non-conference loss at Jacksonville on Monday evening.

"It was a good ball game," said Eastern Wayne coach Marvin Bowman. "Our kids played very well. If we had made our free throws, we would have had a better opportunity to win the ball game."

Eastern Wayne shot 9 of 18 at the free throw line.

Cowan finished with five three-pointers, while Lamar Davis added 12 points for the Warriors.

Eastern Wayne (0-3) entertains North Lenoir today.

Faith Christian

collects victory

FAYETTEVILLE -- T.J. Sasser provided a double-double -- 17 points, 10 assists -- as Faith Christian hammered Liberty Christian 80-40 in non-conference play Tuesday evening.

Aaron Sladick complemented Sasser with a 16-point effort. Taylor Stocks and Jeremy Sandlin each contributed 10 points for the Conquerors.

Faith Christian (3-1) plays host to Liberty Christian-Durham on Friday.

Saints endure

home defeat

DUDLEY -- Wilmington New Hanover turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and rolled past Southern Wayne 63-44 on Tuesday evening.

The Wildcats turned their slim three-point halftime lead into a 16-point cushion after three quarters of play. They outscored the Saints 34-18 in the second half.

"We played a pretty good game tonight and I thought we played a whole lot better (than Monday)," said Saints coach Chuck Crumpler. "But the third quarter just beat us down a little bit."

Ebony Darden paced Southern Wayne's offense with 15 points. Shakoria Clark and Lynneshia Leonard tallied nine points apiece.

Southern Wayne (1-2) travels to Goldsboro on Friday.

Cougars still

seek first win

SMITHFIELD -- Danielle Irby and Kianna Williams turned in solid offensive efforts in Goldsboro's 51-45, non-conference loss at Smithfield-Selma on Tuesday evening.

Irby delivered a team-high 13 points and four assists. Williams contributed 11 points, three assists and three steals for the Cougars, who fell to 0-2 overall.

Victoria Williams and Zeara McDuffie collected nine and seven points, respectively.

First-year Goldsboro coach Brandy Smith said senior forward Camille Early is out for two weeks with a broken finger. Early sustained the injury in practice last week.

The Cougars play host to county rival Southern Wayne on Friday.

Aycock stumbles

in second half

CLAYTON -- C.B. Aycock stayed within striking distance at halftime, but Clayton pulled away in the final 16 minutes for a 64-48, non-conference victory Tuesday evening.

Jasmine Dobbin led the Golden Falcons with 14 points and four steals.

"Clayton is a well-coached team that is very fundamental," said first-year Golden Falcons coach Carrie Reynell. "We knew they weren't going to make a lot of mistakes. We played hard, but we didn't play smart basketball."

The Golden Falcons (0-4) travel to Wilson Fike today.

Billups, Washington

pace Warriors

JACKSONVILLE -- Brittanni Billups and Yasmine Washington each turned in double-digit efforts in Eastern Wayne's 52-47, non-conference loss at Jacksonville on Monday evening.

Billups finished with 19 points and five rebounds. Washington nailed two three-pointers on the way to a 13-point outing.

Noelle Kelly added six points and six rebounds. Point guard Ebony Reid provided three points, seven rebounds, eight assists and one steal.

Eastern Wayne (0-3) entertains North Lenoir today.

Freshman Drew Tesar notched a second-period pin and Eastern Wayne slipped past Washington 45-33 in non-conference action Tuesday evening at New Hope.

The Warriors built a 21-point lead on individual victories from Jordan Harris (112 pounds), Chris Tesar (119), James Knight (130), A.J. Washington (135), Detori Mitchell (140) and Brian Lincoln (152).

Washington collected three consecutive wins, beginning at 160 and closed the overall match score to 33-27. The teams traded six points until Drew Tesar and Daniel Garcia headed to the mat for the final bout of the evening.

Each grappler spent considerable time on his back, but raised either his left or right shoulder to avoid getting pinned. Garcia put Tesar on his back early in the second period, but Tesar scored a reverse and pinned Garcia at the 3-minute, 5-second mark.

It was Tesar's fifth pin of the season.

Eastern Wayne returns to action Saturday in the Pierce-Davis Memorial at SouthWest Edgecombe in Pinetops. Opening-round matches are slated to begin approximately at 9 a.m.

Trio sparks

Eastern Wayne

Eastern Wayne's Mason Chenier, Melvin Shipman and Xander Robinson each prevailed in two individual events during a five-team meet contested Tuesday evening at the Goldsboro Family Y.

The trio helped the Warriors easily out-distance runner-up Southern Wayne 393-218 in team competition. C.B. Aycock finished third with 204 points, followed by Kinston (150) and Clinton (146).

Chenier touched the wall first in the 50 free (22.75 seconds) and 100 free (51.04). Shipman captured the 200 free (2:08.98) and 100 back (1:01.45). Robinson seized the 200 IM (2:19.18) and 500 free (5:27.83).

The Warriors' Eric Gross and Tyler Leeson each took second place in two events. Gross was runner-up to Shipman in the 200 free and touched the wall behind Chenier in the 100 free. Leeson, meanwhile, settled for runner-up honors in the 200 IM and 100 fly.

Spencer Rouse claimed third in the 50 free and 100 back. Dustin Rhodes was third overall in the 500 free, and Ryan Klinkicht seized third in the 100 breaststroke. Bradley Jenkins was third in the 100 fly.

On the girls' side, the Warriors edged the Saints 304-248. The Golden Falcons accumulated 231 points. Clinton and Kinston rounded out the scoring with 165 and 163 points, respectively.

Eastern Wayne's Bailey Upchurch emerged a double winner in the 100 fly and 200 IM. Ashley Robinson secured first in the 200 free.

Ashleigh Deal and Regan Stoneburner combined for three second-place finishes. Deal competed in the 100 back, while Stoneburner fared well in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM.

Courtney Garland ended up third in the 100 back. Aimie Hook was fourth overall in the 50 and 100 free.

Individual results were not available for C.B. Aycock or Southern Wayne at press time.

Chargers pull

out OT victory

Cameron Ford hit the game-tying shot in regulation and Wayne Country Day eventually triumphed 44-40 in overtime against county rival Wayne Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

Brandon Davis led the Chargers' attack with 23 points. Von Eason contributed 10. Ford and Jack Scott each scored eight.

Wayne Country Day (2-0) travels to Oakwood on Thursday.

CLAYTON -- Kyle LaFlamme tallied 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds in C.B. Aycock's 41-35, non-conference loss at Clayton on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons' Isaac Royals contributed six points and six assists.

"These guys are improving," said Aycock coach Davis Harris.

grabs road win

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian remained unbeaten in two outings with a 47-19 victory over Liberty Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

Wilson Head led the Conquerors with 10 points, while Drew Floars scored six.

Catherine Ford pumped in a game-high 11 points in Wayne Country Day's season-opening, 29-28 victory over county rival Wayne Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

Jennifer Price led Wayne Christian with nine points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Hanna Kaler and Kayla Kennedy each provided eight points.

Wayne Country Day (1-0) is the guest of Oakwood on Thursday, while Wayne Christian (1-2) opens its Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference season at home against Cape Fear Christian.

Middle schools

Wayne Christian 32, Wayne Country Day 20 -- Chase King posted a game-high 16 points for the Eagles, while Chase Darden added 12. Hil Tanner led the Chargers with 13 points, while Johnny Gallman contributed four. WCDS (0-1) travels to Oakwood on Thursday. Wayne Christian entertains Cape Fear Christian on Friday.
