Wayne Christian boys lose season opener

Hendrick Van Dorp delivered a game-high 19 points and state-ranked Terra Ceia turned back Wayne Christian 43-39 in the season-opening game for both boys basketball teams Tuesday evening.
Derek Joyner complemented Van Dorp's effort with a 10-point showing. Terra Ceia is ranked No. 4 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A poll.
T.A. Brannan paced Wayne Christian with a double-double -- 16 points, 15 rebounds. Eric Williams contributed nine points, while Adam Brannan and Nick Woods each tallied six points.
The Eagles (0-1) travel to Bethel Academy for a two-day tournament which begins Thursday.

Goldsboro falls
to J.T. Hoggard
WILMINGTON -- Goldsboro High's Danielle Irby poured in a career-high 23 points, but the Cougars couldn't overcome a second-quarter deficit in their season-opening 47-39 loss at J.T. Hoggard on Tuesday evening.
The Vikings denied first-year Goldsboro head coach Brandy Smith her first victory on the prep scene.
Freshman Zearra McDuffie chipped in six points and four rebounds. Tiffany Burden contributed four points, seven rebounds and four assists. Camille Early, who spent the first half in foul trouble, finished with two points.
Victoria Williams added four points.
Hoggard outscored Goldsboro 19-8 in the second quarter and led 30-15 at halftime. The Cougars owned a 24-17 scoring edge over their guests in the final two periods of play.
"We did everything we could," said Smith. "We played hard defense, but that second quarter really hurt us. But, the second-half effort was what I needed to see for the future."
Katy Norris led the Vikings, of the Mideastern 3-A/4-A Conference, with 11 points. Chanel Davis added 10.
The teams meet again next Tuesday at Goldsboro.

endures defeat
Michelle Krug pumped in nine points as Wayne Christian opened its season with a 42-25, non-conference loss against Terra Ceia on Tuesday evening at Clifford Gymnatorium.
Brittany Sullivan and Hope Wright each scored four points for the Eagles.
Wayne Christian (0-1) returns to play Thursday in a tournament at Bethel Academy.

Kayla Kennedy collected 13 points and dished out four assists in Wayne Christian's season-opening 39-24 victory over Terra Ceia on Tuesday evening.
Hanna Kaler added eight points. Jennifer Price provided six points, two assists and two rebounds. Charity Wright picked the Knights' pockets for three steals.
Wayne Christian (1-0) is the guest of Arendell-Parrott Academy next Monday.
