North Lenoir defeats winless Goldsboro

LaGRANGE -- Nick Williams rushed for two touchdowns and North Lenoir remained in playoff contention with a 22-6 victory Saturday evening over Goldsboro High at Bullock Field.

The Hawks (3-7) improved to 2-2 against EPC opposition heading into Friday's showdown with archrival Greene Central. They must upset the state-ranked Rams to have any aspirations of earning their fourth consecutive postseason bid.

Goldsboro (0-10) entertains North Pitt in the regular-season finale for both teams Friday. Each team is winless in league play.

"Our playoffs basically started two weeks ago," said North Lenoir coach Wayne Jackson. "We knew we had to win out to have a chance and the kids have really stepped up. We're just excited that we still have something to play for next week."

North Lenoir's defense limited the Cougars to 57 yards rushing and 120 yards of total offense. Heralded tailback Treme Boone managed just 22 yards on 11 totes. Quarterback Tim Kornegay scored the visitors' lone touchdown and completed four passes, including three for a combined 61 yards to Jamar Branch.

Goldsboro's score occurred after a Hawks fumble.

"Coach (Calvin) Sutton and Coach (Ben) Walters did an outstanding job of preparing the defense," Jackson said. "Without the turnover, we might have been able to pitch the shutout.

"The challenge of having to win our last three games seems to have really fired up the kids. Especially on the defensive side of the ball."

Offensively, the Hawks controlled the line of scrimmage, pounding the Cougar defense for 267 yards on the ground. Both Williams (27 carries, 141 yards) and Parris Lee (12 carries, 102 yards) topped the 100-yard rushing mark.

Williams also scored on a pair of short TD runs of 2 and 3 yards. Lee added a 7-yard burst.

Justin Hall emerged Goldsboro's top defensive performer with 12 tackles and two assists. Brandon Greene contributed 10 tackles and one assist, while Boone recorded nine solo stops and one assist.

Antonio Greene posted eight tackles and two assists. Andrew Phifer notched seven tackles and three assists.
