H.S. Cross Country: Johnson, Price get all-state recognition

CLEMMONS -- Wayne Christian's Doug Johnson and Jennifer Price received all-state recognition during Friday afternoon's season-ending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A state meet contested at Tanglewood Park.
Johnson, a senior, ran the picturesque and challenging 3.1-mile course in 20 minutes, 47 seconds -- good enough for an 11th-place finish overall. Justin Brathwaite posted a 26th-place time of 22:40, while senior Jon Massey crossed the line 30th in 23:37.
Noah Kearney and Anthony Mulligan completed the Eagles' scoring with finishes of 31st and 34th, respectively. Wayne Christian ended up fifth overall in the team competition with 127 points.
Durham Cresset Christian claimed the state title with a 23-48 decision over Shannon Forest (S.C.) Christian School. Gaston Day was third with 79 points, followed by Flora MacDonald with 90.
Price collected a fifth-place time of 23:34 during the girls' portion of the race. Charity Wright placed 17th in 26:45, while Martha Summerlin recorded a 23rd-place effort of 28:33.
Shelle Anderson and Kayla Kennedy were 24th and 28th, respectively.
Wayne Christian amassed 93 points, good enough for a top-five finish in team competition. Shannon Forest emerged the team state champion with a 27-51 conquest of Gaston Day. Cresset was third with 62 points and Flora MacDonald took fifth with 147 points.
The runners competed on a muddy course that also hosted the 2-A and 3-A championships earlier in the day.
