Warrior netters double up Southern Alamance

Eastern Wayne staged come-from-behind wins at No. 6 singles and No. 2 doubles, and toppled Southern Alamance 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Herman Park.

The Warriors (14-3) needed 4 1/2 hours to earn their first-ever trip to the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A dual-team eastern semifinals. They'll visit county archrival Charles B. Aycock next Tuesday afternoon.

"Our girls took it to them; a super effort," said veteran Eastern Wayne coach Nancy Dawson. "Southern Alamance, up and down the lineup, is one of the most solid teams we've met this season.

"They were a good team."

Eastern Wayne's turnaround started at No. 6 singles.

Elizabeth Borden dropped a first-set tiebreaker against the Patriots' Caroline Lindley. She calmly took the second set 6-3 and eventually claimed a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-6 victory.

In doubles, the Warriors' tandem of Mollie Musgrave-Lindsey Frederick fell behind 6-3 against Southern's Jessica Brown-Lindley.

They eventually gained a 7-6 lead.

Two changeovers later, the Warriors escaped 10-8.

"Our number six singles and number two doubles put us over the top," said Dawson.

Lauren Bynum, Casie Musgrave and Frederick each claimed a straight-set victory in singles. Bynum-C. Musgrave turned in a dominating, 10-2 performance at No. 1 doubles.

Rams' reign as

2-A queens ends

RALEIGH -- Greene Central's reign as the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A state champion ended Tuesday afternoon at Cardinal Gibbons.

The Crusaders (11-4) seized five of six singles matches, including two in tiebreaking fashion, and avenged last year's second-round loss to the Rams in Snow Hill.

"I asked them at practice (Monday) to lay it all on the line today and give me everything they had, and that is exactly what they did," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "The match could have just as easily turned out the other way because we lost two third-set tiebreaks, and almost forced a third-set tiebreak at number four (singles).

"(Gibbons) played exceptional tennis on the big points."

Abby Sugg claimed the Rams' lone singles victory.

"When we started the season with five new starters, most people didn't think we could accomplish a lot this year," said Clark. "But we finished up the year ranked third in the state which is not bad for a team that started three freshmen and a sophomore.

"I am looking for great things from this group next year."

Gibbons is ranked No. 2 in the N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association poll.

The Rams ended the year 13-7.

Pender avenges

loss at home

BURGAW -- Pender avenged last year's eastern semifinal-round loss at Rosewood with a 25-22, 25-13, 25-10 victory in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs on Tuesday.

Courtney Hill led the Eagles with a double-double -- 10 kills, 10 blocks. Kasie Braswell added four kills and five digs. Ashley Williams contributed five kills and one block.

Aubrey Reinhard and Roxie Phillips combined for 14 assists.

Rosewood concluded the year 19-5.

Princeton dealt

tough 4-set defeat

PRINCETON -- Six points separated Princeton from continuing its best postseason perfomance on the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A ranks since 2001.

Heide Trask, the state 1-A runner-up last season, pulled out a 29-27, 23-25, 27-25, 25-23 victory over the Dawgs on Tuesday evening. The Titans collected their sixth playoff victory in their last seven outings and face Waccamaw rival Pender in third-round play Thursday.

Stephanie Daughtry paced Princeton with 18 kills and 19 digs. Sarah Gibbs provided seven service aces, nine kills, three digs and one block. Cynthia Peedin contributed one ace, seven kills, three digs and two blocks.

Kortnie Yutzy chipped in three aces, five kills and 10 digs. Tiesha Williams posted her first double-double -- 13 kills, 12 digs -- of the season.

Brittany Davis handed out 40 assists.

"We were waiting too late in the games to really fight for the win," said Princeton coach Trudy Rast. "If we had come out with that intensity during the first part of the games, we would have been able to keep the lead.

"We have had an excellent season and I am very proud of our team."

Princeton ended the year 19-5.

North Lenoir

DEEP RUN -- North Lenoir concluded the regular-season portion of its schedule with a 7-0, non-conference conquest of archrival South Lenoir on Tuesday evening.

Tyler Smith, Cory Johnson and Dustin King tallied two goals apiece for the Hawks. Cameron Beaman provided one goal and one assist.

Ricky Jarman and Hugo Garcia each dished out an assist. Hawks keeper George Walters recorded three saves to preserve the shutout.

North Lenoir (9-8-2) entertains Greene Central in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference finale for both teams today. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Wheat Swamp.

Charlotte Campbell seized play-of-the-day honors, while Brooke Eason (low gross) and Linda Cannon (low net) also fared well during weekly play at Walnut Creek.

Mary Ann Sutton won low putts.

'In Eastern Ladies League play at Kinston Country Club, Faye Franklin took second low gross in the second flight. Nancy Satterfield secured low putts in the fifth flight.

Middle schools

Rosewood volleyball d. Brogden 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-27, 15-11 -- Rebecca Fail, Jenna Aycock, Stephanie Hall, Kerri Jo Gurley, Heather Silvani, Kristen Lynn, Rachel Kornegay, Chelsea Sawkiw and Ellen Margaret Arnette all served well for the Eagles. Rosewood (9-2) travels to Norwayne today.
