Smith scores twice in Eastern Wayne victory

Dustin Smith provided two goals within a four-minute stretch as Eastern Wayne turned back Kinston 4-1 in quarterfinal-round play in the 2006 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference men's soccer tournament.

The fourth-seeded Warriors (8-9-2) oppose regular-season champion Charles B. Aycock, the top seed, at 7 p.m. today at Little Big Horn.

Third-seeded Wilson Beddingfield escaped Southern Wayne 5-4 and faces county archrival Wilson Hunt at 5 p.m. today. The winners advance to Wednesday's championship game at 7 p.m.

Smith's goals in the 38th and 42nd minutes secured Eastern Wayne's second consecutive victory over the fifth-seeded Vikings in a four-day period. The Warriors prevailed 1-0 in the 78th minute on Wednesday and seized the league's No. 4 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, which begin Nov. 1.

Bryan Coltrane opened the scoring in the eighth minute off Robbie Keys' assist. After a Kinston goal, the duo hooked up again -- this time Keys put Eastern Wayne on top 2-1 off Coltrane's assist in the 35th minute.

Warrior keepers Vincent Hagedorn and Josh Omsted combined for seven saves.

Volleyball

Rosewood takes

opening-round match

Courtney Hill provided 15 kills and seven blocks in Rosewood's 25-19, 25-13, 25-19 victory over Holly Ridge Dixon in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A volleyball playoffs.

Hill added four digs and one service ace for Rosewood, which improved to 19-4 overall. Roxie Williams collected two blocks, three digs and six kills. Chandra Meadows contributed three digs and two kills.

Kasie Braswell chipped in four digs, one ace and six kills. Carissa Morrison delivered three kills.

Roxie Phillips and Aubrey Reinhard combined for 18 assists.

The Eagles, the Carolina Conference co-champions, travel to Pender for a second-round match Tuesday. It's a rematch of last year's third-round encounter won by Rosewood.

Pender (22-2) eliminated North Duplin in straight sets Saturday.

Princeton rolls

over Midway

PRINCETON -- Princeton advanced to the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs with a 25-13, 25-16, 25-16 conquest of Midway.

Cynthia Peedin led Princeton's attack with 10 kills and three blocks. Stephanie Daughtry recorded seven aces, six kills, nine digs and one block. Sarah Gibbs posted two aces, seven kills and two digs.

Kortnie Yutzy registered two aces and five kills, while Heather Smith picked up six digs defensively. Amber Wood had seven digs.

Brittany Davis dished out 28 assists to go along with four digs and one ace.

The Dawgs (19-4 overall) entertain Heide Trask, the 2005 state 1-A runner-up, at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Trask, the No. 2 seed from the Waccamaw Conference, ousted James Kenan in the opening round.

North Lenoir

rams Franklinton

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir opened the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A playoffs with a 25-11, 25-6, 25-14 thrashing of Franklinton at Wooten Gymnasium.

Sisters Lauren and Jordan Hudson combined for 16 assists in the three-set sweep. Marisa Lanier, Brittany Sanders and Anna Kennedy notched four kills apiece.

Connor Jordan and Brittany McPhail each recorded three kills.

The Hawks (19-3 overall) play host to Hillsborough Orange on Tuesday.

WCDS receives

NCISAA at-large bid

GREENSBORO -- Wayne Country Day has received an at-large bid to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs.

The Chargers, directed by third-year coach Juliet Jones, drew the No. 11 seed in the 12-team field. They'll face sixth-seeded Northwood Temple on Tuesday.

WCDS defeated Faith Christian-RM 25-17, 25-11, 25-17 in the Coastal Plains Independent Conference tournament semifinals on Friday. They lost to regular-season champion Kerr-Vance in the finals.

Stephanie Sykes and Ashley Clarke earned spots on the all-conference team. Clarke and Shelly Sullivan were named to the all-tournament team. Sullivan and Jessica Lewis garnered all-CPIC honorable mention recognition.

Jones was named the CPIC coach of the year.

Eagles qualify

trio for states

Rosewood's Sidney Worrell finished fourth overall in singles play and teammates Missy Bailey-Erica Nichols ended up third in doubles action during the N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern 1-A regionals contested at Herman Park.

Worrell, seeded third in the 16-player draw, opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Louisburg's Laura Lord. She qualified for this weeks' state finals with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over East Carteret's Mary Safrit.

Topsail's Kendra Kessler ended Worrell's regional title-bid aspirations with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory. East Bladen's Beth Mundy topped Worrell 6-1, 7-6 (5) in the third-place match.

The Eagles' Jamie Andrews outlasted James Kenan's Megan Sanderlin 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first-round encounter. Mundy eliminated Spring Creek's Jamie Johnson 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the first round and followed that up with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Andrews.

In doubles, Bailey-Nichols started the day with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 conquest of Southeast Halifax's Phyllis King-Ashley Wright. The duo qualified for the state tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 rout of Wallace-Rose Hill's Lindsay Powell-Ali Benton.

Topsail's tandem of Martha Morris-Brittany Cockrell, the reigning regional doubles champions, bounced Bailey-Nichols into the consolation bracket with a 6-3, 6-0 decision in the semifinals. Morris-Cockrell successfully defended their title with a straight-set win over Ayden-Grifton's Laura Steinlein-Lindsay Richardson.

Bailey-Nichols defeated Williamston's Samantha Williams-Katie Godley 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-3 in the third-place match.

The NCHSAA Individual Championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Cary Tennis Center. First-round matches begin at 10 a.m. Friday.
