Bruins roll over Saints

WILSON -- Wilson Beddingfield exploded for 29 second-quarter points in nearly seven minutes and cruised past turnover-plagued Southern Wayne 59-22 on Friday evening.

The Bruin defense capitalized on six turnovers en route to a 34-point advantage at halftime. The Saints yielded an interception and fumble return for touchdowns, and allowed a safety.

"The kids played hard, but we just turned the ball over too many times," said Southern Wayne coach Bob Warren. "Beddingfield had a lot of big plays."

Southern Wayne played without leading rusher Anthony Council (1,197 yards), who injured his left hip last week at Eastern Wayne.

"Anthony is still a little sore from last week," said Warren.

Kelvin Flow grinded out 96 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns on runs of 3 and 7 yards. Eric Futrell, who provided a fourth-quarter touchdown, and Tristan Bass combined for 133 yards rushing.

The Saints had 271 yards of total offense.

Warren said Daquan Cozart, Paris Armwood, John Futrell, Eric Futrell and Brady Wiggins played well on defense. Wiggins picked off one Bruin pass.

Beddingfield (2-6) evened its Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference worksheet at 1-1, and will play host to Eastern Wayne next Friday. Meanwhile, the Saints (4-4, 0-2 ECC) return home for a league battle with Kinston.

Each game kicks off at 7:30 p.m.

"This is a pretty-balanced conference and Kinston is playing extremely well at this point of the season," said Warren.

"We've got to get some people healed up and play up to our potential."
