Saints' Hirsch takes ECC 3-A women singles' title

SNOW HILL -- Southern Wayne sophomore Tara Hirsch continued her record-setting pace by emerging the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference women's singles champion on Thursday afternoon.

Hirsch, the No. 1 seed in the 16-player draw, turned back Wilson Hunt's Anna Strader 6-4, 6-2 in the championship match. Hirsch eliminated Eastern Wayne's Casie Musgrave 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Strader, who was unseeded, recovered from an opening-set loss to oust second-seeded Lauren Bynum 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Eastern Wayne's Mollie Musgrave-Lindsey Frederick won the ECC doubles title by default. Charles B. Aycock senior Raychel Batts could not play due to illness.

Rosewood gets

Carolina title

Rosewood senior Sidney Worrell claimed the Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference singles title with a straight-set victory over Spring Creek's Jamie Johnson on Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles also seized the team championship with a decisive 24-10 edge over runner-up Ayden-Grifton. The Gators and Panthers tied for third with eight points, followed by James Kenan (six points), Wallace-Rose Hill (five points) and North Duplin (one point).

Worrell eliminated Kenan's Lorry Chestnutt in the semifinals, while Johnson lost just one game in a straight-set victory over Rosewood's Jamie Andrews.

Ayden-Grifton's Laura Steinlein-Lindsay Richardson won the doubles title.

Worrell, Johnson, Andrews, Chestnutt and Megan Sanderlin qualified for the N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern regionals. Rosewood's duo Erica Nichols-Missy Bailey earned a regional berth in doubles.

Rams' Hudson

pulls off upset

SNOW HILL -- Second-seeded Cally Hudson upset teammate Sara Beth Carraway en route to the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference women's singles championship on Thursday afternoon.

Hudson turned back Carraway, the No. 1 seed, 6-3, 6-3 on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts. Both players return to action next week in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Mideastern Regional in Durham.

An all-Tarboro final in doubles also resulted in an upset. Second-seeded Alison Thompson-Genelle Wilson stopped top-seeded Jasmine Burroughs-Miranda Spain 6-3, 7-6 (5). Each tandem also earned a regional berth.

Greene Central and Tarboro tied for the EPC regular-season championship, but Tarboro won the coin flip and No. 1 seed for the dual-team playoffs. The Rams, the reigning NCHSAA 2-A state champions, travel to the Northern Carolina Conference champion on Tuesday.

Saints fall

on road

KINSTON -- Southern Wayne played Kinston to a 2-2 tie at halftime before Kinston rallied for four unanswered goals to claim a 6-2 win on the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference scene.

Rosendo Molina and David Zometa scored one goal each for the Saints (0-10 overall), who slipped to 0-8 in league play. Adiel Nunez stopped 13 saves in goal for Southern Wayne.

The Saints host Wilson Hunt on Monday.

W. Country Day

suffers OT loss

WILSON -- Greenfield pulled out a 4-3 overtime win and claimed the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference championship Thursday afternoon at Wayne Country Day's expense.

The Knights (13-6-1) seized their 10th consecutive victory and earned a regular-season sweep of the Chargers.

"Both teams are evenly matched, but they've seemed to come out on top both times," said WCDS coach Paul Estrada. "The entire team played awesome and I'm so very proud of these boys."

Sam Steed tallied two goals for the Chargers, who concluded regular-season play 12-4-1 overall with a 4-3-1 CPIC worksheet. Joseph Cha provided one goal.

Keeper Ryan Ford had five saves.

Greenfield clinched the automatic bid for the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs, which begin Oct. 20.

Wayne Christian

dealt CCC defeat

Durham Cresset Christian emerged the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference men's soccer champion with a 4-1 victory over host Wayne Christian.

Cresset earned the league's automatic bid for the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs.

Hayden Gardner converted a penalty kick for the Eagles, who won the South Division in CCC play. Gardner and Matt Rouse each earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Wayne Christian goalie Eric Williams was named CCC player of the year. John Norris, Bryan Alexander, Andrew Radford and Williams garnered all-conference recognition.

The Eagles concluded the year 8-10-1.

Cross country

Hicks, Rebels

take CC 1-A meet

KENLY -- North Duplin's Justin Hicks turned in a personal-best time and the Rebels remain unbeaten in four Carolina 1-A Conference meets.

Hicks ran the 3.1-mile course at North Johnston in 18 minutes, 46 seconds and helped the Rebels edge Spring Creek 37-49. Princeton finished third with 60 points, followed by Rosewood (86) and the host Panthers (103).

The Gators' Ryan Kelly ended up second in 19:24. North Duplin's Clint Bland and Michael Mathis took third and fourth, respectively. Princeton's Chris Hinton rounded out the top five.

On the girls' side, the Panthers' Elizabeth Baker emerged the top runner in 22:18. North Duplin's Rocio Alvarado was second in 23:22. Princeton runners Olivia Booker and Megan Hewett seized the next two spots.

Princeton nipped North Johnston 28-32 in team competition.

The final Carolina Conference meet is scheduled for Oct. 19 at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park.

Eastern Wayne

shares ECC crown

Eastern Wayne finished co-champions in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference with a 25-18, 25-14, 25-20 victory over Kinston on Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors (13-2, 9-1 ECC) won a coin flip and gained the No. 1 seed for the season-ending conference tournament, which begins Monday. Eastern Wayne opposes either fourth-seeded Wilson Hunt or fifth-seeded Southern Wayne in semifinal-round play Tuesday.

Head coach Bruce Burridge played his seniors the first and second games, and the final five points of game three. It was the last regular-season home match for Anna Wilkins (13 kills, four blocks), Carly Boyette (four kills), Syrena Bryant (five kills), LeeAnna Rothwell (four aces), Jasmine McLamb and Megan Pittman.

Brooke Newsome dished out seven assists and served eight aces. Brittanni Billups added two kills, while libero Anna Hajjar posted 12 digs. Jordei Osby contributed one kill and three blocks.

Golden Falcons

upend So. Wayne

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock honored nine seniors before its regular-season finale against Southern Wayne and eventually claimed a 25-14, 17-25, 25-23, 25-19 victory over the Saints.

The Golden Falcons (11-5) finished 6-4 against Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opposition and drew the No. 3 seed for next week's conference tournament. They'll play sixth-seeded and winless Kinston at 5 p.m. Monday at Wilson Beddingfield.

Southern Wayne (3-7) is seeded fifth and faces fourth-seeded Wilson Hunt the same day at 7 p.m.

Amy Fryt led Aycock's offense with a career-high 17 kills. Lauren Pratt added seven kills. Julia Lancaster served six aces.

Fryt, Pratt, Lancaster, Shelly Lancaster, Jazzmine Lee, Garrett Forrest, Rusti Talton, Laura Thigpen and Kaitlyn Stafford participated in their final home match of their prep careers.

North Lenoir

rolls past GC

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir gained a share of the Eastern Plains 2-A regular-season conference crown with a 25-9, 25-13, 26-28, 25-14 victory over Greene Central at Wooten Gymnasium.

Kayla Sutton doled out 13 kills in the four-set affair. Senior outside hitter Brittany Sanders added 12 kills, while freshman Marisa Lanier contributed eight kills.

Brittany McPhail posted six kills. Lauren Hudson dished out 28 assists.

North Lenoir (16-3, 9-1) and Farmville Central tied for regular-season supremacy and each earned an opening-round bye for next week's tournament. The Hawks will be the host team.

Faith Christian

sweeps Trinity

GREENVILLE -- Heather Crumpler turned in an all-around floor game as Faith Christian swept Trinity Christian 25-21, 25-17, 25-19 on the N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region scene Thursday.

Crumpler provided three digs, two blocks, seven assists and two aces for the Conquerors. Katlyn Floars added one dig, four kills, one block and one assist.

Brooke Anderson collected two digs, five kills and one block. Renee Provencal handed four assists to go along with two aces. Summer Honeycutt (two kills) and Rebecca Smith (four digs) also played well.

Faith Christian (7-4, 7-2 NCCSA Coastal 2-A) continues conference play next Tuesday at Falls Road Baptist.

North Pitt

knocks off GHS

BETHEL -- Camille Early delivered four kills and three blocks in Goldsboro's 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 loss at Eastern Plains 2-A rival North Pitt on Thursday.

The Cougars (1-19, 0-10 EPC) drew the No. 6 seed for next week's league tournament and travel to third-seeded Greene Central.

Jerrica Cole added two blocks, while Tiffany Burden contributed one block and one kill. Lavenia Lipford served an ace. Aziza Hutchinson posted one block.

North Duplin

beats S. Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Heather Hudson pounded out a match-high 14 kills and North Duplin defeated Spring Creek 25-23, 25-16, 25-10 in the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams.

Hudson added five digs and two blocks for the Rebels, who finished 9-6 overall and 4-6 in conference play. Brittany Carr provided six kills, two assists, six aces and 12 digs.

Casey Pate contributed four kills and eight digs. Sam Cates and Vanessa Lynch combined for 20 assists, five aces and nine digs.

Tasha Whitfield led the Gators' attack with eight kills and one block. Kristin Smith recorded four kills, one ace and one assist. Shaquita Brooks pounded out six kills to go along with two blocks.

Brooke Albertson handed out eight assists.

Spring Creek (4-11) ended the year 2-8 in Carolina Conference play.

Forbis emerges

Invitational winner

WILSON -- Kelli Forbis claimed the Willow Springs Invitational championship with a 2-over par 73 on Thursday afternoon.

Host Wilson Fike claimed the team portion of the day-long event with a two-player score of 159. Forbis and teammate Brooke Newell, who posted a 91, paced Aycock to a second-place finish with 159.

The Golden Falcons return to action next Monday afternoon for an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course.

JV volleyball

Carter helps

serve up CBA win

PIKEVILLE -- Beth Carter served four aces as C.B. Aycock swept Southern Wayne 25-16, 25-15 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams.

"It was a total team effort," said Golden Falcons coach Sandra Overby.

C.B. Aycock finished the year 8-7 overall and 6-4 in the ECC.

Faith Christian

conquers Trinity

GREENVILLE -- Madison Caudle and Brittany Dail each provided three kills in Faith Christian's 25-6, 25-17 conquest of N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A rival Trinity Christian.

Caudle and Dail combined for seven digs on defense.

Courtney Albritton contributed two digs and four aces. Zoe Singer added four assists and one kill.

Faith Christian improved to 5-4 overall and travels to Falls Road Baptist next Tuesday afternoon.

Hawks clinch

EPC 2-A crown

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir captured the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference regular-season championship with a come-from-behind 22-25, 25-18, 25-19 victory over Greene Central at Wooten Gymnasium.

Enjoli Mason and Talisha Johnson led the Hawks' attack with four and three kills, respectively.

Shaniqua Thomas, Courtney Hill and Brittany Fillipelli each served well in the three-set win.

North Lenoir (10-6) finished 7-1 against EPC competition.

Rosewood seizes

Carolina 1-A title

Rosewood either gained a share of the Carolina 1-A Conference or won it outright with a 25-14, 25-13 conquest of archrival Princeton on Thursday afternoon.

Head coach Jennifer Cochran was not sure of the final regular-season standings.

Taylor Johnson emerged the Eagles' overall leader with three blocks, one dig, seven aces and eight kills. Paige Babb and Jennifer Hall combined for 11 assists and two kills.

Christie Phillips provided four kills and three digs.

Gators take

three-set win

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Jordan Coor posted seven aces and six assists in Spring Creek's 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 triumph over Carolina 1-A archrival North Duplin on Thursday afternoon.

Shaquita Brooks added six kills and four blocks. Megan Smith and Randi Oxendine combined for six aces.

Sam Cates led the Rebels with five kills, six assists and six aces. Katie Swanzey recorded six aces. Felicia Lynch contributed four kills, four assists and two aces.

Katlyn Eloshway chipped in two kills, five aces and two digs.

suffers road defeat

GREENVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock concluded regular-season play with an 8-1 loss against the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department team on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons' No. 3 doubles of Hollie Baker-Lizzie Sodoma claimed an 8-1 win.

C.B. Aycock finished the year 7-5 overall.

Middle schools

Norwayne volleyball d. Brogden 25-11, 22-25, 25-14, 25-17 -- The Cobras improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 against Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I foes. Norwayne is the guest of Rosewood on Monday.

Football

Grantham d. Mount Olive 12-8 -- Justin Grady scored touchdowns on runs of 10 and 5 yards for the Bulldogs. Devondre Johnson and John Taylor Graham combined to catch three passes for 145 yards. Max Waddell led Grantham's defense with eight unassisted tackles. Richard Kenion recovered two fumbles and had two tackles for loss yardage. Grantham (1-4) evened its record at 1-1 against Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II foes. The Bulldogs travel to Spring Creek next Thursday.

Brogden d. Norwayne 32-26 (2 OT) -- Rico Rich scored both touchdowns in overtime as the Rams improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 against WCMSAC Division I opposition. Bernard Gross (35-yard TD pass), Dustin Holcombe (47-yard TD pass) and J.D. Lofton (12-yard TD run) contributed to the victory. Jyhkia Applewhite led the Rams' defense with eight solo tackles and two fumble recoveries. Lofton had seven solo stops. Ray Teachey (6 tackles), Devin Oliver (5 tackles) and Gross (four tackles, one interception) also played well on defense. Norwayne (4-2, 1-2 WCMSAC Division I) entertains Greenwood next Thursday, while Brogden welcomes Mount Olive.
