ROSEBORO -- Brandon Satchell provided the game-winning touchdown in the final 82 seconds of regulation and state-ranked James Kenan escaped Lakewood 15-7 on Friday evening.
It was the Class 1-A Super Six opener for both teams.
The Leopards led 7-0 until Stedman Mathis pulled the Tigers within 7-6 on a 29-yard touchdown run. Juan Vasquez booted the PAT for a 7-7 tie.
Satchell's 3-yard plunge with 1:22 remaining gave unbeaten James Kenan a 13-7 advantage. Jamian Smith squelched Lakewood's upset with a two-point conversion run for the 15-8 finale.
Mathis and Stedman combined for more than half of the Tigers' offensive output. Mathis rambled for 99 yards on 14 carries, while Satchell grinded out 80 yards on 16 totes.
James Kenan, ranked No. 6 in the latest Associated Press 1-A poll, had 265 yards of total offense and didn't complete a pass in five attempts. The defense limited Lakewood to 127 yards of total offense, including 47 on the ground.
The Tigers (7-0, 1-0) entertain Midway next Friday, while Lakewood is the guest of five-time defending Super Six champion Wallace-Rose Hill. The Bulldogs have won all 26 games against conference opposition since the league's inception in 2001 and are ranked No. 2 in the state.
