Rebels dealt lopsided defeat by Panthers

KENLY -- North Johnston began defense of its Class 1-A Carolina Conference championship with a 52-12 victory over North Duplin on Friday evening.

The Panthers (4-3) grabbed early momentum when they collected a safety against the Rebels on the opening series of the game. North Johnston led 17-0 after one quarter and boosted its advantage to 31-6 by halftime.

North Duplin managed 217 yards of total offense and committed two turnovers. The Panther defense limited Michael Schilling to 33 yards on eight carries, including a 10-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter.

Quarterback Doug Lloyd rushed for 107 yards and one touchdown, but passed for a season-low 24.

North Johnston amassed 412 yards of total offense, including 342 on the ground. The Panthers ran 59 offensive plays compared to 47 for the Rebels, who are 2-2 in Carolina Conference openers since 2003.

North Duplin (4-2) returns to action next Friday at Princeton. North Johnston, which picked up its sixth consecutive conference victory, plays host to Rosewood.
