MOC soccer teams split with Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK -- April Jacobs, who ranks in the top 15 among the nation's assists leaders, assisted on a pair of goals 12 minutes apart in the second half as Mount Olive came from behind to defeat Lees-McRae 2-1 in a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans (11-5, 6-1 CVAC) picked up their sixth consecutive CVAC win and seventh victory overall in their last eight outings.

Lees-McRae (4-7-1, 2-4-1) broke the deadlock on a goal in the 52nd minute to take a 1-0 lead.

The Trojans evened the match in the 65th minute when Jacobs' corner kick found Emily Escolas in the box. Escolas has scored the Trojans' first goal in each of the last two matches.

The match stayed tied until Kate Painter put home the game-winner in the 77th minute off an assist by Jacobs.

Jacobs ranks 14th in the nation and first in the CVAC with 13 assists. Painter moved into sole possession of third place in the CVAC with her 10th goal.

Lees-McRae 2

Mount Olive 0

BANNER ELK -- Lees-McRae tallied two goals in a four-minute stretch in the second half and defeated Mount Olive College 2-0 in CVAC action.

The Trojans (8-6, 2-4 CVAC)had their five-match win streak snapped. They had held 10 of their first 13 opponents to one goal or less.

The Bobcats (7-5-2, 4-2-1) broke the deadlock in the 46th minute by Matt Lacey. Kyle McGinley provided an insurance goal in the 50th minute.

Mount Olive goalie Chase Smith finished with eight saves.

The Trojans -- men and women -- return action Thursday for a CVAC doubleheader at Belmont Abbey. The women's game kicks off at 1 p.m. and the men follow at approximately 3 o'clock.
