Goldsboro spikers earn first win of 2006

Senior hitter Camille Early provided three kills and Goldsboro High captured its first volleyball win of the season Friday afternoon against county rival Wayne Country Day.

Early served two aces and recorded two blocks in the Cougars' 25-22, 25-18, 25-20 victor over the Chargers. Tiffany Burden contributed one ace, two kills and one dig. Aziza Hutchinson had one block, while Brianna Wallace added a dig.

Vienna Lewis (one ace) and Lavenia Lipford (one ace, one dig) also played well in the straight-set triumph.

"They all hustled. It was great," said first-year Goldsboro coach Rhet Potter, whose team dropped a three-set loss to Farmville Central on Thursday afternoon. "I was so happy for the girls."

Goldsboro (1-15) avenged a season-opening loss against the Chargers, who dipped to 8-8 overall. The Cougars step back into Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference play on Tuesday with a home match against North Lenoir.

Rosewood repeats

as C/SS champ

Rosewood earned its second consecutive Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference regular-season women's tennis title with a 6-2 conquest of Ayden-Grifton.

The Eagles (11-2, 11-0 C/SS) claimed their 23rd straight victory against conference opposition and secured the No. 1 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs.

Top-seeded Sidney Worrell needed a third-set tiebreaker to turn back the Chargers' Laura Steinlein 6-3, 4-6, 7-4. Teammates Missy Bailey, Jamie Andrews, Erica Nichols and Carli Beasley each posted a straight-set win. Nichols did lose a game.

The tandem of Bailey-Nichols emerged victorious.

Ayden-Grifton prevailed at No. 5 singles and No. 1 doubles. Darkness canceled the No. 3 doubles match with the Chargers leading by one set.

Rosewood concludes its regular-season schedule Monday against North Duplin and begins C/SS tournament play Tuesday at Herman Park. First-round matches begin at 2 p.m.

stops Warriors

Despite playing short-handed, Wayne Christian edged Eastern Wayne's junior varsity squad 5-4 on the John Allen Farfour Courts at Herman Park.

The Eagles competed with just five players and managed to collect their 10th victory in 11 outings overall.

Brooke Barfield, Katie Fairchild and Lindsay Whaley each claimed a pro-set (eight-game) victory in singles. Whaley edged the Warriors' Tayler Falcone 9-8, including 7-4 in the tiebreaker. The tandems of Barfield-Fairchild and Samantha Reeves-Regan Hinton each prevailed in doubles.

Eastern Wayne's Katie Snell and Louise Northington each won a contested match in singles. Brandi Walston earned a default at No. 6. The duo of Margaret Guijarro-Falcone drew a default at No. 3 doubles.

The Warriors concluded the year 7-7.

CCC 1-A shootout

ERWIN -- Wayne Christian dominated the shootout session and nipped Cape Fear Christian in a Carolina Christian 1-A Conference battle.

Bradley Yelverton tallied the Eagles' lone goal in the opening half.

Cape Fear answered with a game-tying goal in the second half to force overtime.

Taylor Gardner, Jordan Crouthamel and Chase Garden each posted goals during the shootout period as the Eagles improved to 4-3 overall.

Middle schools

Grantham volleyball d. Brogden 25-20, 25-14, 25-17 -- Courtney Holland emerged the Bulldogs' top offensive performer with four service aces and four kills. Madison Davis provided three aces and two kills, while Amber Lanier contributed two aces and two kills. Taylor Hood added an ace. Kanesha Jones served three aces for the Rams, while teammate Rebecca Rodriguez had seven digs.
