Garten leads Saints to road win

KINSTON -- Charlie Garten provided a team-leading eight kills in Southern Wayne's 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 conquest of Kinston on the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference volleyball scene Thursday afternoon.

Clarice Sherard added six kills for the Saints, who snapped a three-match losing streak. Bridget Parvin and Christy Weaver (two blocks) each contributed five kills.

Rachel Reynolds collected 12 digs and served four aces. Libero Meredith Davis recorded eight digs.

Southern Wayne (2-6, 2-6 ECC) entertains Wilson Hunt next Tuesday.

survives Hunt

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock kept its postseason aspirations alive and squeezed out a 26-24, 27-25, 25-22 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Wilson Hunt.

The Golden Falcons (10-4) improved to 5-3 in the league and own a two-game lead over the Warriors, who fell to 3-5 against ECC opposition.

"I didn't like the fact they were all close, but it was good for us because we had to pick ourselves up mentally and focus on closing it out," said Aycock coach Davis Harris of the close games.

Amy Fryt led the Golden Falcon attack with 12 kills. Lauren Pratt provided eight kills.

"I was really pleased with (libero) Garrett Forrest," said Harris. "She had lots of good digs and lots of good passes."

C.B. Aycock plays host to county archrival Eastern Wayne next Tuesday.

Dawgs clinch

share of CC title

KENLY -- Princeton claimed a share of the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season title with a 25-9, 25-18, 25-17 victory over North Johnston on Thursday afternoon. The Dawgs (16-2) remained unbeaten in eight conference matches and can clinch the championship outright at home next Tuesday against Ayden-Grifton. Princeton last won a Carolina Conference crown in 2002.

Stephanie Daughtry had 10 kills and four digs in the straight-set win. Cynthia Peedin added nine kills and one dig. Sarah Gibbs contributed one service ace, four kills, three digs and one block.

Kortnie Yutzy played an exceptional floor game with three aces, three kills, 11 digs and one assist. Brittany Davis dished out 26 assists.

Chargers turn

back Rebels at home

LITTLEFIELD -- Ayden-Grifton continued its late-season climb up the Carolina 1-A Conference ladder with a 25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 25-17 victory over North Duplin.

Heather Hudson led the visiting Rebels with five kills, five digs and three blocks. Brittany Carr provided five kills, seven aces and eight digs. Julie Ivey chipped in five kills and four aces. Vanessa Lynch and Sam Cates (four kills) each handed out nine assists.

North Duplin (8-5, 3-5 Carolina) entertains Rosewood next Tuesday.

North Lenoir

crushes Panthers

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir continued its quest for Eastern Plains 2-A regular-season supremacy with a 25-18, 25-10, 25-11 dismantling of North Pitt at Wooten Gymnasium. Lauren and Jordan Hudson handed out 14 and 12 assists, respectively, in the straight-set sweep.

Freshman Marisa Lanier emerged the Hawks' offensive leader with eight kills. Brittany McPhail added seven kills, while senior outside hitter Brittany Sanders recorded five kills.

The Hawks (14-3, 7-1 EPC) visit Goldsboro next Tuesday.

Greene Central

collects EPC win

SNOW HILL -- Brianna Stanton provided 10 kills in Greene Central's 25-11, 25-17, 25-19 win over Tarboro on the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference scene Thursday afternoon.

Elizabeth Webb dished out 11 assists for the Rams.

Greene Central (7-8) improved to 5-3 in the EPC.

WCDS pulls

out 5-set thriller

WILSON -- Wayne Country Day rallied from a two-set deficit and eased past Greenfield 15-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-9 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference ranks.

Shelly Sullivan recorded a double-double -- 12 kills, 10 digs -- to go along with four aces. Jessica Lewis contributed five kills, while Kayla Flanagan had two aces and five digs. Stephanie Sykes provided 10 kills and five digs.

Ashley Clark dished out 28 assists for the Chargers.

"They never gave up," said WCDS coach Juliet Jones. "They came together and pulled it through. This was a big conference win for us."

Wayne Country Day (8-7, 4-2 CPIC) is the guest of Goldsboro today.

outlasts Wildcats

WARSAW -- Kendall Wolz recorded a team-high six kills and James Kenan knocked off Super Six 1-A rival Hobbton 16-25, 25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 15-2. Stephene Williamson had two aces. Lauren Houston and Demetrius Farrior each served one ace.

The Tigers (7-5) improved to 4-3 in conference play.

shut out Saints

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock polished off its 28th consecutive conference championship with a 9-0 victory over Southern Wayne in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference finale for both teams Thursday afternoon.

Raychel Batts, Lizzie Sodoma, Kristen Prosser, Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett and Courtney Barnes each posted a straight-set win. Quinn and Barnes each shut out their respective opponents.

Sodoma-Prosser, Quinn-Bennett and Barnes-Kara Kelly each prevailed in doubles.

"Our girls played with the kind of energy and intensity we need heading into the playoffs," said C.B. Aycock coach Luke Vail. "We need to continue to work on our doubles play for the postseason. I was really proud of our effort and determination after a tough loss yesterday (Wednesday)."

C.B. Aycock (13-3) concludes regular-season play at home Monday against Rocky Mount.

blitzes Kinston

Eastern Wayne clinched a playoff berth with a 9-0 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Kinston on the Wayne Community College courts.

Lauren Bynum, Mollie Musgrave, Casie Musgrave, Lindsey Frederick, Nicole Fine and Elizabeth Borden each triumphed in straight sets.

Bynum-C. Musgrave, M. Musgrave-Frederick and Borden-Emily Northington completed the shutout with wins on the doubles scene.

Eastern Wayne (10-3, 8-2 ECC) finishes its regular-season slate at home Monday against New Bern.

WARSAW -- Spring Creek concluded regular-season play with a 5-4 loss at Carolina/Super Six 1-A foe James Kenan on Thursday afternoon.

Jamie Johnson, Jamison Mossberg and Rachel Lewis each collected a singles win for the Gators. The tandem of Maura Phipps-Rachel Lewis earned the Gators' lone doubles victory.

Spring Creek (2-14, 2-10) returns to action next Tuesday in the season-ending Carolina/Super Six tournament at Herman Park.

Rams earn piece

of EPC 2-A title

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central earned a share of the Eastern Plains 2-A regular-season conference championship with a 9-0 victory over Farmville Central on Thursday afternoon.

The Rams (12-6) finished tied atop the EPC standings with Tarboro at 7-1.

"I think it is remarkable that we finished as co-champions," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "This is the 13th year in a row that we have finished first in girls' tennis, but it was certainly much more of a challenge for this year's rebuilding squad."

Brittany Horton, Sarah Beth Carraway, Cally Hudson, Elizabeth McLawhorn, Samantha Taylor and Dana Spivey each picked up a straight-set singles win.

Greene Central begins conference tournament play next Tuesday.

Eagles' Price

takes individual win

SMITHFIELD -- Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price seized an individual victory during Thursday afternoon's four-team, Carolina Christian 1-A meet at Johnston Christian. Price ran the 3.1-mile course in 24 minutes and 54 seconds. Teammates Martha Summerlin and Shelle Anderson ended up seventh and 10th, respectively.

Cresset Christian edged the Eagles 25-33 in team competition.

On the boys' side, Wayne Christian's Doug Johnson claimed fourth place overall in 19:43. Justin Brathwaite seized the eighth spot and Jon Massey finished 14th overall.

Cresset racked up a 17-63 win over the Eagles. Northwood Temple was a distant third with 81 points.

White Oak

shuts out EW

JACKSONVILLE -- Marcus Krueger tallied goals in the 6th and 77th minutes as White Oak handed Eastern Wayne a 3-1, non-conference defeat Thursday evening.

Dustin Smith collected the Warriors' lone goal -- a penalty kick in the 45th minute.

The Vikings owned a 17-14 edge in shots on goal. Eastern Wayne keeper Vincent Hagedorn notched a season-high 14 saves, while White Oak goalie Jared Smith recorded eight stops.

The Warriors (6-7-1) entertain Wilson Hunt on Monday.

Golden Falcons

rebound at home

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock erupted for four second-half goals, including three in a six-minute span, in a 5-3, non-conference win over North Johnston on Thursday evening.

Jorge Delgado provided the Golden Falcons' lone first-half goal in the 17th minute. His goal in the 63rd minute sparked the offensive surge that included goals from Gavin Forrest and Carson Sasser.

Sasser pulled Aycock within 3-2 on a goal in the 49th minute. Alex Rodriguez provided two second-half assists. Delgado and Burke each delivered an assist for the Golden Falcons, who outshot the Panthers 20-10. Aycock keeper Jared Kennedy had four saves.

The Golden Falcons (11-2-1) entertain Kinston on Monday.

Chargers cruise

past Spartans

Sam Steed delivered two goals and state-ranked Wayne Country Day hammered Kerr-Vance 5-1 on the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference scene Thursday afternoon.

David Wilson, Cameron Strickland and Cameron Ford each added a goal for the Chargers, who entered the week ranked No. 2 in the latest N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll.

"The guys played real well," said WCDS coach Paul Estrada. "(Our) defense was outstanding and Ryan Ford was awesome in goal with two excellent saves.

"Again, we had excellent play from the bench, and each player played with smarts and confidence."

Wayne Country Day (12-3, 4-2 CPIC) entertains Ridgecroft next Tuesday.

drops CCC match

ERWIN -- Wayne Christian suffered its second consecutive loss within a 24-hour stretch as Cape Fear emerged victorious 3-2 in overtime on Thursday afternoon.

Matt Davis and Hayden Gardner provided one goal each for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian slipped to 7-9-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference ranks.

DUDLEY -- C.B. Aycock prevailed in five of six singles matches and cruised past county rival Southern Wayne 8-1 on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons received singles victories from Hollie Baker, Cynthia Burroughs, Nicole Kessler, Hannah Daughtry and Ashley Howell. Daughtry posted a shutout at the No. 5 spot.

The tandems of Kessler-Burroughs, Howell-Kristen Fischer and Baker-Alicia Sodoma each claimed a doubles win.

Scarlett Price emerged the Saints' lone winner in singles.

EDENTON -- Greene Central swept the doubles and captured a come-from-behind 5-4, season-ending victory over John A. Holmes on Thursday afternoon.

The Aces owned a 4-2 edge after singles play.

The Rams picked up doubles victories from Ashley Grant-Grayson Daniell, Casey Perry-Dulce Quinarez and Abbey Dail-Jessica Gray. Grant and Daniell won their respective singles matches.

Greene Central concluded the year 9-2 overall.

Taylor Johnson added two blocks and four kills for the Eagles, who picked up their sixth consecutive victory. Paige Babb contributed two blocks, one ace, two kills and seven assists. Christie Phillips and Megan Church each served two aces.

Rosewood (9-5, 6-1 CC) entertains Union on Monday.

The Hawks scored 10 points with Enjoli Mason on serve and eight points with Nichole Howard at the service line. North Lenoir (10-6, 6-1 EPC) entertains Greene Central on Oct. 12.

LITTLEFIELD -- Ayden-Grifton rallied from an opening-set loss, but battled back to defeat North Duplin 23-25, 27-25, 25-18 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Thursday afternoon. Sam Cates paced the Rebels' attack with five kills, four assists and six aces. Katie Swanzey contributed six kills and three aces.

Katlyn Eloshway (four aces) and Crystal Robinson (three kills) also played strong in the three-set loss.
