Fredrick, C. Schlaeppi shine during three-team ECC meet

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Nik Fredrick and Caroline Schlaeppi emerged the top runners during a three-team, Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference meet Tuesday afternoon.

Fredrick ran the challenging 3.1-mile course in a personal-best 18 minutes, 14 seconds and helped the Golden Falcon boys nip archrival Eastern Wayne 35-37. Beddingfield finished third with 54 points.

The Warriors' Steven Henrick crossed the finish line second in 18:44. Teammate Tim Wright ended up third in 19:27, followed by Beddingfield's Dalton Ford. Eastern Wayne's Dustin Rhodes claimed fifth in 19:50.

C.B. Aycock seized three of the next four spots to wrap up the win. Eric DuBose took sixth with a PR of 20:11. Daniel Pennington grabbed seventh in 20:45 and teammate Travis Reeves recorded a ninth-place time of 21:37.

"Nik and Eric ran well, and that was a good time for Daniel, too," said Golden Falcons coach Shelia Covar. "The two small hills -- that's why they find it difficult. It's not like a lot of courses that are flat."

On the girls' side, Schlaeppi posted a meet-winning time of 23:19. Eastern Wayne's Sarah Ricker and Natalie Taylor finished second and third, respectively, to help the Warriors prevail 28-29 in team competition.

Megan Hales complemented Schlaeppi with a fourth-place effort of 24:02. The Warriors' Kelly Gregorcyk and Sarah Schley rounded out the top six.

"We had improvement overall for the girls, too," said Covar.

The Bruins didn't field enough runners for a team score.

Greene Central

upends Tarboro

SNOW HILL -- In a battle of state-ranked foes, Greene Central turned back Tarboro High 6-3 and refused to relinquish its grasp on the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference championship Tuesday afternoon.

The Rams, ranked No. 4 in the latest N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association poll, improved to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in the EPC. The Vikings (15-2) suffered their first league defeat in seven outings.

"I am so proud of this group of girls," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "They played like champions today. We were focused throughout the match, and every one of my girls fought their heart out.

"Tarboro has an outstanding team once again this year, and it took our absolute best effort to win this match."

Greene Central received singles wins from Brittany Horton, Cally Hudson, Elizabeth McLawhorn, Samantha Taylor and Abby Sugg. Horton and Sarah Beth Carraway lead the Rams with 13 singles wins apiece, while Sugg has 12 in 16 tries.

Hudson-Dana Spivey emerged victorious at No. 3 doubles for Greene Central.

The Rams entertain C.B. Aycock, ranked No. 6 in the NCHSTCA 3-A poll, today.

Saints in doubles

MOUNT OLIVE -- Visiting Wilson Hunt swept the doubles and escaped Southern Wayne 6-3 in their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match contested Tuesday afternoon on the John Neal Walker Complex courts.

The Saints' Tara Hirsch, April Tucker and Brianna Lofton each emerged victorious in singles. Tucker outlasted the Warriors' Jordan Winslow 5-7, 6-2, 10-4.

Southern Wayne (8-5, 4-5 ECC) concludes regular-season play Thursday at county rival C.B. Aycock.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Joseph Cha provided two goals and David Wilson dished out two assists in Wayne Country Day's 4-1, non-conference victory over Rocky Mount Academy.

Sam Steed and Byron Bryan each tallied a goal for the state-ranked Chargers, who improved to 11-3 overall. Steed and Jeff Franklin each contributed an assist.

Steven Marshall and Nathaniel Patel each provided a goal in Faith Christian's 2-0 victory over Liberty Christian-Fayetteville during their N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region match Tuesday.

Jason Vaughn assisted on both goals.

The Conquerors (2-5, 2-3 NCCSA 2-A) play host to Berean Christian next Tuesday.

dominates Hunt

Senior middle hitter Anna Wilkins delivered a match-high 14 kills in Eastern Wayne's 25-17, 25-17, 25-10 thrashing of Wilson Hunt on Tuesday afternoon.

Wilkins served three aces and added three solo blocks for the Warriors, who improved to 10-2 overall and 6-1 against Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opposition. Frontline mate Brittanni Billups contributed seven kills, four aces, four assists and four blocks.

"I think we're finally clicking; coming together," said Eastern Wayne coach Bruce Burridge. "I guess it's a pretty good time to do it. Hunt played well and was scrappy, but we just controlled (the game) and didn't let up."

Carly Boyette collected six kills, four aces and two blocks. Jasmine McLamb and Jordei Osby combined for 12 kills and five blocks.

Brooke Newsome dished out 28 assists.

Anna Hajjar, the Warriors' libero, notched 24 digs on defense.

Eastern Wayne entertains defending ECC champion Wilson Beddingfield at approximately 6 p.m. Thursday. The Bruins beat the Warriors in five sets nearly three weeks ago.

dumps Kinston

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock continued its quest for a playoff spot with a 25-13, 25-23, 25-21 dismantling of Kinston on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons (9-4) claimed sole possession of third place in the six-team league at 4-3. The top four teams qualify for the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, which begin Oct. 21.

Amy Fryt led Aycock with 11 kills and Shelly Lancaster added nine kills.

C.B. Aycock entertains Wilson Hunt (3-4 ECC) on Thursday.

Rosewood ends

two-match skid

Kasie Braswell pounded out a team-high 10 kills and Rosewood snapped its two-match skid in Carolina 1-A Conference play with a 25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 25-5 victory over North Johnston.

"(It was) great teamwork," said Rosewood coach Jennifer Cochran. "We all played as a team and had communication on the court."

Senior middle hitter Courtney Hill contributed eight kills, two aces and four blocks. Ashley Williams added six kills, one ace and two blocks. Chandra Meadows served five aces.

Roxie Phillips and Aubrey Reinhard combined for 22 assists.

Rosewood (13-3, 5-2 CC) entertains Spring Creek on Thursday.

Faith Christian

escapes Liberty

Brooke Anderson recorded 11 kills and five blocks in Faith Christian's come-from-behind 18-25, 25-21, 25-15, 22-25, 15-10 victory over Liberty Christian-Fayetteville on Tuesday evening.

Anderson added five digs and one block for the Conquerors, who improved to 6-3 overall and 6-1 against N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region opponents.

Katlyn Floars contributed nine kills, two blocks and one ace. Alyssa Hill had two digs and four kills. Summer Honeycutt collected four kills.

Renee Provencal and Heather Crumpler combined for 31 assists. Crumpler had three blocks and five digs defensively.

Greene Central

earns EPC victory

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central climbed above the .500 mark in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play with a 25-8, 25-27, 25-16, 25-17 victory over Goldsboro.

Megan Lovett and Morgan Albritton emerged the Rams' top servers.

First-year Cougars coach Rhet Potter, as usual, received solid play from Tiffany Burden, Camille Early and Jerrica Cole. Burden and Cole combined for three aces. Early recorded three kills.

Goldsboro (0-7 EPC) entertains defending conference champion Farmville Central on Thursday and county foe Wayne Country Day on Friday.

The Rams (6-8, 4-3) play host to Tarboro on Thursday.

Spring Creek

diffuses Chargers

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Brooke Albertson dished out 13 assists in Spring Creek's 25-23, 14-25, 26-24, 12-25, 15-12 win against Carolina 1-A Conference opponent Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.

Albertson served two aces and collected three kills for the Gators.

Kristin Smith (two kills) and Jordan Coor each provided four aces.

Tasha Whitfield pounded out 11 kills.

Spring Creek (4-8, 2-5 CC) travels to defending conference champion Rosewood on Thursday.

Hawks keep

pace in EPC 2-A

TARBORO -- North Lenoir remained tied for the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference lead after its 25-18, 25-12, 14-25, 25-18 conquest of Tarboro High on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hawks (13-3) and reigning champ Farmville Central are both 6-1 in the league.

Freshman outside hitter Marisa Lanier led North Lenoir with 11 kills. Brittany Sanders and Kayla Sutton each added seven kills. Sutton and Brittany McPhail each recorded four blocks.

Lauren Hudson dished out 14 assists.

North Lenoir entertains North Pitt on Thursday.

Princeton one

step closer to title

CALYPSO -- The magic number is one.

Princeton moved within one victory of clinching a share of the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season crown with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-10 victory over North Duplin.

The Bulldogs (15-2) remained unbeaten in seven Carolina outings and travel to archrival North Johnston on Tuesday. Princeton is seeking its seventh regular-season championship overall and first since 2002.

Stephanie Daughtry recorded six kills and six digs for the Dawgs. Sarah Gibb added four kills, while Cynthia Peedin contributed five kills. Kortnie Yutzy provided two kills, seven digs and one block.

Princeton tallied 16 straight points with Tiesha Williams on serve in the third set. Brittany Davis handed out 10 assists.

Heather Hudson emerged the Rebels' top player with 11 kills, eight digs and three blocks. Vanessa Lynch registered two kills, seven assists, three aces and three digs.

Brittany Carr posted two kills, one ace and 11 digs. Julie Ivey had one kill, seven assists and two aces.

North Duplin (8-4, 3-4) is the guest of Ayden-Grifton on Thursday.

Christopher served an ace and Caudle emerged the defensive leader with eight digs. The Conquerors improved to 4-3 overall.

TARBORO -- Shaniqua Thomas pounded out seven kills in North Lenoir's come-from-behind 19-25, 25-19, 25-16 victory at Eastern Plains 2-A rival Tarboro on Tuesday afternoon.

Felicia Johnson added four kills for the Hawks.

North Lenoir (9-6, 5-1 EPC) plays host to North Pitt on Thursday.

Gator victory

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Jordan Coor served a match-high 13 aces in Spring Creek's 25-19, 25-22 thumping of Ayden-Grifton in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

Coor dished out two assists and one kill for the Gators, who improved to 4-8 overall and 3-4 against league opposition.

Shaquita Brooks added one kill and one block, while Megan Smith recorded three digs defensively. Hanna Hall, Kristin Smith and Randi Oxendine contributed to the straight-set win.

Spring Creek travels to Rosewood on Thursday.

Princeton

tops N. Duplin

CALYPSO -- Sam Cates, Katie Swanzey and Felicia Lynch each had two kills in North Duplin's 25-20, 25-22 loss against Carolina 1-A Conference foe Princeton.

Cates and Lynch combined for five assists. Swanzey had five digs, while Katlyn Eloshway contributed two aces and three digs.

North Duplin continues league play Thursday at Ayden-Grifton.

Johnson, Tart

lead Eagles' effort

Taylor Johnson and Caroline Tart each recorded five kills and combined for eight aces as Rosewood defeated North Johnston 25-20, 25-16 on Tuesday afternoon.

Paige Babb added one kill, four aces, three assists, one block and three digs for the Eagles. Jennifer Hall recorded eight digs and three assists.

Rosewood (6-1 Carolina) plays host to Spring Creek on Thursday.

Eastern Wayne soccer 2, Brogden 0 -- The Warriors' Steven Taylor provided the game-winning goal, off Ryan Allison's assist, with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Nick Bowden sealed the victory with a goal off Elliott Best's assist. Eastern Wayne (5-0) improved to 3-0 in Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I play and entertains Rosewood on Thursday. Brogden (3-1-1, 1-1-1 WCMSAC Division I) plays host to Grantham the same afternoon.
