The Mount Olive women's soccer team faces an NCAA Division I opponent tonight as the Trojans travel to Orangeburg, S.C., to take on South Carolina State. Match time is 7 p.m.
A live audio Webcast of the match is available on the Mount Olive College website. Go to www.moc.edu and click "Athletics."
Mount Olive (2-0-0) notched a pair of one-goal victories over the weekend on its trip up north to the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Trojans defeated Millersville 1-0 Saturday, then outlasted Goldey-Beacom 3-2 in double overtime Sunday.
Two-time All-Region and All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference midfielder April Jacobs tallied two assists and the game-winning goal Sunday. The junior from Fayetteville ranked 16th in the nation in assists last year.
Juniors Kate Painter and Caitlyn Wright have moved to forward positions this year and both figured prominently in the two wins. Painter, a two-time All-CVAC midfielder, scored the game's only goal Saturday, taking a service from Wright just inside the midfield line and going all the way to goal.
Wright, the Trojans' starting sweeper for most of the last two seasons, also recorded the assist on Sunday's overtime game-winner.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ali O'Steen, who played mostly as a backup last year, played every minute in goal over the weekend. O'Steen recorded her first collegiate shutout Saturday and she enters tonight's contest with a 0.93 goals against average.
South Carolina State (1-0-0) is coming off a 2-1 win at home over Lipscomb (Tenn.) Friday. Sophomore Star Tazwell and junior Lauren Emrich each scored a goal for the Bulldogs, which limited Lipscomb to six shots on goal.
Tonight's contest concludes the Trojans' season-opening three-match road swing. Mount Olive plays host to the women's soccer Sleep Inn Classic Friday and Saturday at Trojan Field.
