Tigers sweep Cougars on volleyball court

James Kenan dealt Goldsboro a 25-15, 25-14, 25-13 non-conference defeat Tuesday afternoon.

"My girls played really good," said first-year Cougar coach Rhet Potter. "We're a young team.

"We're learning each time we play a game."

Senior hitter Camille Early emerged the team's offensive spark with several good blocks and kills, according to Potter.

Goldsboro (0-2) plays at home next Monday afternoon.

Warriors roll

past New Bern

Eastern Wayne opened its 2006 season with a 25-23, 25-16, 25-18 non-conference victory over New Bern.

Anna Wilkins and Carly Boyette contributed seven and five kills, respectively. Jasmine McLamb added five kills, while Brittani Billups chipped in with three.

Wilkins and Boyette each had two blocks.

New Bern won the junior varsity match.

Eastern Wayne (1-0) returns to action Saturday at the Swansboro Invitational. The Warriors have pool matches scheduled against Wilmington Laney, Swansboro and Holly Ridge Dixon.

Eagles battle

to scoreless tie

Wayne Christian fired 25 shots on goal, but came up empty in a 0-0 draw against Carolina Christian 1-A opponent Northwood Temple on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagle defense, spearheaded by Andrew Radford and John Thomas Morris, held the visitors to two shots on goal. Keeper Travis Travis earned the shutout.

"Our defense played an outstanding game," said Wayne Christian coach Darrell Anderson.

The Eagles (0-1-1) entertain Community Christian at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Rams drop

second outing

ROCKY MOUNT -- Sara Beth Carraway remained unbeaten on the singles scene as Greene Central suffered a 6-3, non-conference loss against Rocky Mount on Tuesday afternoon.

Carraway climbed to 2-0 overall with a 6-3, 6-2 conquest of the Gryphons' Addie Keeter in their No. 2 singles match. Teammate Brittany Horton, the No. 1 seed, prevailed 6-2, 6-1 over Ashley Pearsall.

The Rams' No. 3 doubles of Ashley Grant-Elizabeth McLawhorn rolled past the Gryphons' Emma Dare Barnhill-Margaret Arroyo 8-1.

"We played much better today in our second match of the season," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "Our doubles was tremendously better. I was pleased that the girls put themselves into a position to win this match, and I think our team gained a lot of confidence from how well we played under pressure."

Greene Central (0-2) returns to the courts Thursday at Charles B. Aycock.

Hawg Breath tourney

The Hawg Breath Bass Club held its August tournament on Saturday at the Neuse/Trent rivers. Bernie Leeson and Larry Hoch won first place, Doug Vaughn and Bill Rex were second. Big fish honors went to Joe Moye.

The next tournament will be Sept. 16 at the Chowan River. Anyone interested may contact John Edwards at 778-0165.

Walnut Creek LGA

Faye Franklin seized game-of-the-week honors and Kathy Woodard claimed low gross during play at Walnut Creek.

Mary Ann Sutton won low net and Linda Cannon claimed low putts.
