Wayne Co. Amateur applications available
Applications for the 8th annual Wayne County Amateur golf tournament are now available at any of the county golf courses. The dates and locations of this years tournament are -- June 2 at Lane Tree, June 3 at Goldsboro Municipal and June 4 at Walnut Creek. You must be a resident of Wayne County or a member at one of the county golf courses to be eligible to play.
UNC Seniors exhibition game
The UNC seniors will play the James Kenan All-Stars in an exhibition game today at historic Kenansville Memorial Auditorium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Expected to participate are former Tar Heels David Noel, Byron Sanders, Will Robinson and Thomas Wilkins. A slam-dunk contest is scheduled for halftime. The Tar Heel seniors will conduct a one-hour autograph session after the game. Fans may bring no more than three articles for signatures. Tickets are $8 in advance and can be purchased for that price until 3 p.m. today. ACC Roundball Challenge at WCDS
Wayne Country Day will host the ACC Roundball Challenge, featuring former ACC players, on Thursday at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are $8 and tickets are $10 at the door. Any advanced tickets already purchased for the original date of April 11 are still valid. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for the event. For more information, telephone (919) 580-7572.
SW Super ball tournament
The inaugural Southern Wayne Softball Super Ball golf tournament is scheduled for April 18 at Lane Tree Golf Course. Start time is 1 p.m. and the registration fee is $50 per person, or $200 per four-player team. McCall's Barbecue will cater the event. Jones Co. Tournament of Champions
The Jones County Recreation Department will sponsor the 13th annual Tournament of Champions youth basketball games April 20-22 at Jones Sr. High School. Age divisions are 10-U, 12-U, 14-U, 16-U and 18-U. Boys and girls are allowed to play on the same team and all girl teams are welcome also. The tournament is single elimination and awards will be presented to all first-place teams. Only four teams will be accepted in each division on a first-come basis. B.G. Darden Golf Classic
The 8th Annual B.G. Darden Golf Classic will be held May 5 at the Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. The tournament is a 4-man captain's choice with prizes for morning and afternoon tee times. Wayne Christian Golf Tournament
The Wayne Christian Golf Tournament will be held May 11 at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. The tournament, which also features a putting contest, is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start and lunch will be provided. The fee for individual players is $50 and $200 for a four-player team. A mulligan package and hole and team sponsors are also available. All proceeds go towards the purchase of a new shuttle bus for the school. For more information, contact Hayley Burt at 580-7966.
Wayne Co. Post 11 meeting/tryouts
Wayne County Post 11 American Legion coach Brad Reaves has scheduled a mandatory tryout-participant meeting for April 30 at 3 p.m. in the Southern Wayne High School gymnasium. Interested players must attend to cover the necessary paperwork issues. An open, two-day tryout is scheduled for May 20-21 at Scarborough Field on the Mount Olive College campus. Reaves and his staff will run a pro workout the first day and conduct a controlled scrimmage the next day.
