MOC women's golf team opens season this weekend

The Mount Olive women's golf team heads to the coast this weekend to open its 2006 spring campaign. The Trojans head to Kiawah Island, S.C., to compete in the Tusculum College/Kiawah Island Women's Golf Intercollegiate.

The two-round tournament begins Saturday.

Two-time All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference selection and Eastern Wayne graduate Lindsey Snyder earns the distinction of being the first-ever four-year player in the history of the Trojan women's golf program. She was the lone member of the team when the program started in 2002-03.

Junior Kate Somek earned All-Tournament honors at last year's CVAC Tournament after shooting a school-record 77 in the final round. Her final round included a 135-yard eagle on the 13th hole.

Sophomore Kristen Freeman, also an Eastern Wayne graduate, carded her best 18-hole score during the fall, carding an 89 in the first round of the Lenoir-Rhyne/Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate.

Freshmen Brianna Whaley and Deborah Woodrum both competed in the fall and begin their first spring golf action.

Chip Spiron begins his third year as head coach.

Mount Olive is among seven CVAC teams and 15 teams overall competing in this weekend's tournament. Four of the participating teams are ranked nationally in the top 15.
