Eastern Wayne wrestlers fare well at New Bern

NEW BERN -- Four Eastern Wayne grapplers posted undefeated records during a day-long, dual-team tournament contested at New Bern.

Seniors Joey Burridge and Travis Turner; junior Brandon Johnson and sophomore Chris Tesar each grabbed five wins for the Warriors. Burridge climbed to 24-2 overall and is seven victories away from reaching the 100-win plateau for his career.

Turner improved to 30-0 and is on pace to shatter the school's single-season win total. Tesar climbed to 28-0 and has 73 career wins in one-plus seasons. Johnson, who has beaten two returning state qualifiers in recent weeks, is now 29-4.

Detori Mitchell ended the day 4-1 with matches at 135 and 140 pounds. Mitchell is one of six Eastern Wayne wrestlers to record 20 or more victories thus far this season. Brian Lincoln, a 160-pound junior, is 21-5 after picking up a decision against West Carteret and pinning New Bern's Clay Feret.

The Warriors (11-5) opened the dual-team event with a 45-27 loss against former Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference rival West Carteret. Burridge picked up the team's biggest individual win -- a 5-3 decision against Frankie Dennis, who placed in last year's state tournament.

Eastern Wayne avenged a loss against New Bern and dumped West Craven, another former ECC foe, by a 60-18 count. The Warriors fell to Havelock 51-24 and concluded the day with a 52-21 rout of Swansboro.

The Warriors entertain Princeton, a second-year program, at 7 p.m. today.
