Vic Young is CVAC Player of the Week

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive guard Victor Young has been named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.

Young, a 6-2 guard from Goldsboro, averaged 17.5 points in Mount Olive's two wins last week. Young scored a game-high 19 points Wednesday in the Trojans' 82-58 conference win over St. Andrews. Young scored eight of his points in the first three minutes to help spark Mount Olive to an early double-digit lead.

Young added 16 points and four steals against Chowan the following night and helped break open a close game midway through the first half. Young recorded steals on back-to-back possessions to ignite a 32-7 scoring run over the final eight minutes of the first half as the Trojans turned a one-point lead into a 56-30 advantage at halftime. Mount Olive went on to win 89-62.

For the season, Young is averaging 14.1 points and 2.0 steals per game. Earlier this season, he was named Most Valuable Player of the 40th Annual Mount Olive Pickle Classic. Last season, he was named to the All-Tournament Team at the East Regional of the 2005 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship. He also scored a team-high 23 points in the Trojans' Elite Eight contest against Bryant.

For the second week in a row, Mount Olive forward Teneal Boone has been named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.

Boone, a 6-1 senior from Jacksonville, tallied her fourth double-double in seven games as she matched a career high with 26 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in the Trojans' 78-64 conference win over St. Andrews. Boone scored 18 of her points in the second half, including 10 points during a game-clinching 13-2 run late in the game.

Boone is averaging a double-double with 18.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, including her 18-point and 11-rebound performance in Monday's win at Virginia State. Boone has eclipsed the 20-point mark three times this season and has reached double figures in points or rebounds in every game.

Mount Olive is off to its best start in more than a decade with a 7-1 mark. The Trojans are third in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference standings at 2-1, a half-game out of first place. Mount Olive's lone defeat this year was by one point.

Mount Olive is off for Christmas Break, then returns to action with a pair of afternoon home games on New Year's weekend. The Trojans play host to North Carolina Central Dec. 30, then entertain Presbyterian on Jan. 2. Tip-off for both games is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.

up to No. 9 in poll

Mount Olive moves up a spot to No. 9 in this week's NABC Division II Men's Basketball Top 25 Poll. The Trojans have been ranked as high as No. 6 and have been in the top 10 in four of the first five polls this season.

Mount Olive (7-1 overall, 2-1 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference) received 120 points in the poll, 18 points behind No. 8 Florida Southern and four points ahead of No. 10 West Virginia State. The Trojans play at West Virginia State on Jan. 4 in a battle of top 10 teams.

The Trojans extended their winning streak to four and their home winning streak to 14 with a pair of wins last week. Mount Olive defeated St. Andrews 82-58 Wednesday in a CVAC match-up, then defeated Chowan 89-62 the following night. Five of the Trojans' seven wins this season have been by double digits.

Defending national champion Virginia Union jumped two spots to No. 1 with 193 points and two first place votes. Previously top-ranked Montevallo (Ala.), which suffered its first loss of the season Monday, drops to No. 2 with 189 points, despite receiving five of the eight first-place votes. Western Washington garnered the final first-place vote and moved up one place to No. 3. Preseason No. 1 Tarleton State (Texas) drops from No. 2 to No. 17 after suffering back-to-back losses last week.

Mount Olive is among three East Region teams ranked in the top 25. Joining the Trojans and West Virginia State is No. 16 West Liberty State (W. Va.), which is one of four unbeaten teams in the top 25.
