MOC women improve to 7-1

PETERSBURG, Va. -- Teneal Boone recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds as Mount Olive withstood a second half rally to defeat Virginia State 56-53 in non-conference NCAA Division II women's basketball Monday at Petersburg. With the win, the Trojans improve on their best-ever start in the Division II era.

Mount Olive (7-1) led 30-14 at halftime, but Virginia State (0-9) hit 6-of-12 three-pointers in the second half and cut the lead down to one with less than two minutes left. But Mount Olive sealed the win from the free throw line. The Trojans outrebounded Virginia State 48-38 and pulled down 27 offensive boards.

The win is Mount Olive's second over Virginia State this season. Alisa Jones, who scored a career-high 17 points in the first meeting, tallied 10 points and five rebounds Monday. Sierra Medeiros added eight points and eight rebounds. Boone also tallied a team-high three steals. Anita Rogers shared game-high honors with four assists and also pulled down five rebounds.

Virginia State was led by Katania Walker's 14 points, while Erica Glasper finished with 13 points and Caromekia Parker added 10 points. Five of VSU's nine losses this season have been by four points or less.

Mount Olive is off for Christmas break, then returns to action with a pair of afternoon home games on New Year's weekend. The Trojans play host to North Carolina Central on Dec. 30, then entertain Presbyterian on Jan. 2. Tipoff for both games is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
