Trojan women remain perfect in four tries

CHARLOTTE -- Teneal Boone posted her second double-double of the year with 19 points and 10 rebounds and Ebony Green's three-point play with less than five minutes remaining put Mount Olive ahead to stay as the Trojans defeated Queens 78-70 in the two teams' Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's basketball opener.

Mount Olive rallied from a nine-point deficit in each half as the Trojans remained the only undefeated team in the CVAC.

Green finished with 15 points and Meaghan Vanderhorst scored eight of her career-high 13 points in the final six minutes. Keona Corley dished out 10 assists for her second consecutive double-figure assist performance.

Mount Olive (4-0 overall, 1-0 CVAC) fell behind 11-2 in the first five minutes of the game, but Green's putback capped a 7-0 run to pull the Trojans within a basket. Queens (0-2, 0-1) extended the lead to seven before Green's basket gave Mount Olive its first lead at 19-18 with 10:08 remaining in the half.

Queens regained the lead as Phylicia Turner's three-pointer sparked a 9-0 run and gave the Royals a 28-21 lead with 4:10 remaining before halftime. Turner led all scorers with 21 points. Queens still led by seven before Corley's basket with three seconds remaining pulled Mount Olive within 35-30 at halftime.

Mount Olive fell behind 45-36 early in the second half after Turner hit her third three-pointer for Queens. Boone's basket with 10:43 remaining pulled Mount Olive within 53-50, but the Trojans could not get any closer than three points until Tomeka Prichard's three-pointer with 6:38 left cut Queens' lead to 62-61.

After Queens hit a pair of free throws, Prichard's three-point play tied the game 64-64 with 6:14 remaining and Vanderhorst's basket 21 seconds later gave the Trojans their first lead of the second half. Queens scored the next four points, but Green converted a three-point play with 4:31 remaining to put Mount Olive ahead to stay 69-68.

Vanderhorst followed with a three-pointer as Mount Olive outscored Queens 13-2 over the final 4:31 of the game.

Prichard scored a career-high 13 points to go with six rebounds, five steals, four assists and three blocked shots.

Both Prichard and Vanderhorst are freshmen. Corley, who also pulled down six rebounds, came within one assist of matching her school record for the second game in a row.

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans travel to Gaffney, S.C., to take on Limestone in a rematch of the first round of last year's CVAC Tournament. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
