Rosewood takes Carolina Super Six win

LITTLEFIELD -- Rosewood moved one step closer to the Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference regular-season title with a 9-0 whitewashing of Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles (8-1) remained unbeaten in seven Carolina matches heading into Wednesday afternoon's home battle against Wallace-Rose Hill. The same teams meet again Thursday afternoon in Teachey.

Kayce Brantham, the reigning Carolina singles champion, collected a 6-1, 6-0 victory against the Chargers' top seed, Laura Steinlein. Fellow Eagles Sidney Worrell, Missy Bailey, Erica Nichols, Jamie Andrews and Jillian Casey each emerged victorious in straight sets.

Worrell, Bailey and Nichols each posted a shutout.

Brantham-Worrell, Bailey-Nichols and Andrews-Karly Beasley each claimed a doubles win.

WILSON -- Southern Wayne captured two victories in doubles play and turned back Wilson Beddingfield 6-3 on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene Tuesday afternoon.

The Saints' No. 2 tandem of Tara Hirsch-Whitli Thornton stopped Cameron Liner-Yesenia Rentaria 8-6. Teammates Katlyn Thornton-Leslie Barrow, the No. 3 seed, blitzed Katie Marie Riddle-Poonum Ambelal 8-0.

The Thornton siblings, Hirsch and Tara Tillman each prevailed in singles.

Southern Wayne (6-5, 2-4 ECC) plays a doubleheader at Kinston on Thursday afternoon.

Beddingfield remained winless in the ECC.

Wilson Fike

WILSON -- C.B. Aycock improved its overall mark to 13-1 overall with an 8-1 win at Wilson Fike on Wednesday.

Raychel Batts, Carlyn Claiborne, Nicole Taylor, Laine Purcell, Lizzie Sodoma and Kristen Prosser emerged with wins with Wilson Fike taking only one set in singles.

In doubles, Claiborne-Purcell and Taylor-Sodoma claimed the Falcons' final two wins. Wilson Fike's Geri Hare and Katelyn Suggs claimed the Golden Demons' only win of the afternoon at No. 3 doubles.

Fike exited the match at 14-2.

Aycock hosts Wilson Hunt today.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central improved to 16-1 on the season with a 9-0 win at its home courts over Wilson Hunt on Wednesday in non-conference action.

Meredith Rouse, Christi Murphy, Ashley Harrell, Michelle Jernigan, Brittany Horton and Elizabeth Cooper won in singles for the Rams, while the doubles combinations of Rouse-Horton, Murphy-Harrell and Jernigan-Cooper finished off the sweep.

Rouse-Horton and Murphy-Harrell are both unbeaten combinations, each at 11-0 overall.

Wilson Hunt fell to 17-4 overall.

The Rams host Goldsboro at 4 p.m. today in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference action.

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock topped Eastern Wayne 9-0 in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference battle on Wednesday at the Falcons' courts.

Kristen Benett, Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett, Courtney Barnes, Kara Kelly and Mallory Strickland each picked up a pro-set singles win. Bennett-Kelly, Barnes-Strickland and Quinn-Jessica Davis each triumphed in doubles.

On Tuesday, Aycock swept Washington 9-0 in a battle of former ECC foes.

Perry, Quinn, Bennett, Barnes, Kelly and Strickland won in singles. Bennett-Kelly, Barnes-Strickland and Quinn-Jessica Davis finished off the sweep in doubles.

The Pam Pack participates in the Coastal 3-A/4-A Conference.

Gators sweep

North Johnston

SMITHFIELD -- Spring Creek evened its Carolina/Super Six 1-A worksheet at 4-4 by sweeping North Johnston in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Smithfield-Selma.

The Gators prevailed 5-3 in the opening match and needed two doubles wins to secure a 5-4 win in the nightcap. Spring Creek improved to 4-6 heading into today's home match against Ayden-Grifton.

"We pulled both of them out," said Gators coach Robert Jones.

Stacy Smith, Kaitlin Murphy and Jamie Johnson each finished the day 2-0 in singles. Smith-Murphy and Johnson-Ivey Best each captured two victories in doubles.

Spring Creek dropped a 6-3 decision to James Kenan on Tuesday.

Smith and Murphy accounted for all three wins.

"We're much improved," said Jones. "We gave them a real scare. I was happy. The matches at the bottom of the lineup were definitely more competitive the second time around."

The Tigers' Jessie Smith won a third-set tiebreaker at No. 5 to stop Heather Price 6-2, 2-6, 7-2. Best failed to convert crucial set points in the opening set of a 7-5, 7-5 loss against Kenan's Brittany Mathis.

PIKEVILLE -- Robbie Keys scored a pair of goals in Eastern Wayne's 4-2 victory over C.B. Aycock on Wednesday afternoon at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Terry Lee and Mason Chenier each scored one goal for the Warriors.

Alex Roosen converted a penalty kick and Andrew Musselman added a goal for the Golden Falcons.

Eastern Wayne (3-5-2) travels to North Lenoir next Monday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons (0-6) entertain the Warriors again next Wednesday.

WILSON -- Senior Joey Burridge turned in a first-place time of 18 minutes, 26 seconds and helped Eastern Wayne sweep a three-team, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Beddingfield.

The Warriors, who placed six runners among the top 10, racked up 20 points compared to runner-up Southern Wayne with 55. The host Bruins finished a distant third with 75.

Paul Wruck claimed second in 18:42 with Beddingfield's Levi Holloman taking third in 18:45. Eastern Wayne's Steven Hendricks grabbed fourth in 18:46 with the Saints' Allen Bennett nearly a minute behind in 19:35.

Eastern Wayne's girls nearly ran unopposed.

Natalie Taylor captured the top spot in 22:01, followed by Helen Baddour in 22:03. Lyddia Hirschy ended up third in 23:01. Ashleigh Deal and Carol Reinier completed the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Beddingfield had just one runner, while Southern Wayne does not have a team.

The Warriors return to action next Tuesday at county rival C.B. Aycock.

CARY -- Wayne Christian defeated Cary Christian 20-25, 17-25, 25-17, 27-25, 15-5 in Carolina 1-A Christian play and snapped a six-game losing streak.

Wayne Christian (4-9, 3-7 CCC) was led by the freshman duo of Katie Daniels and Brooke Norris. Daniels contributed four kills, while Norris added three kills and two blocks. Michelle Krug was complemented for her serve-receiving as Traci Davis turned in a solid effort at the service line.

The Eagles travel to CCC foe Northwood on Friday.

rallies past Hunt

Bruce Burridge still can't believe it.

And, if it's true, don't pinch him to bring him back into reality.

Eastern Wayne shut out Wilson Hunt 15-0 in the fifth set and took a 17-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-7, 15-0 victory in a key Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match Wednesday afternoon.

The Warriors (6-5) climbed into a second-place tie with C.B. Aycock at 3-2 in ECC play.

"This was a big win ... one we needed," said Burridge. "It was a great match. I knew it was going to be tough."

With Carly Boyette on serve, Eastern Wayne scored 15 consecutive points in the final set. Anna Wilkins provided seven kills and one stuff block, while Leanna Rothwell delivered three kills.

"I just watched it on videotape ... so cool," said Burridge. "We put it together. The girls hung in there and never quit."

Wilkins finished with a match- and season-high 23 kills to go along with four blocks and two aces. Rothwell finished with nine kills and five aces. Deniz Alemdar contributed seven kills and four aces.

Boyette added four kills, three aces and three blocks.

Eastern Wayne entertains archrival Southern Wayne this afternoon.

Golden Falcons

PIKEVILLE -- Outside hitter Shelly Lancaster delivered a match-high 13 kills in Charles B. Aycock's 29-27, 25-13, 25-14 victory over Southern Wayne in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons (7-3) improved to 3-2 against ECC opposition.

Laura Thigpen served five aces.

C.B. Aycock head coach Davis Harris said his team received "strong play from Angela Lane."

The Golden Falcons entertain Wilson Beddingfield on Thursday.

Spring Creek

rallies past Rebels

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Tomeka Pride turned in an all-around floor game in Spring Creek's 25-22, 17-25, 25-12, 18-25, 15-8 conquest of Carolina 1-A rival North Duplin on Tuesday afternoon.

Pride provided 13 kills, seven blocks and six aces for the Gators.

Brittani Billups emerged the top server with nine aces and added eight kills. Teammates Lorenda Brogden and Brooke Boggan each served two aces.

Senior middle hitter Sierra Ward recorded 13 kills, four digs and five blocks for the Rebels. Heather Hudson added five kills, one dig, one block and two aces.

Casey Pate and Brittany Carr combined for nine digs on defense.

"Playing Spring Creek is always a good rivalry and tonight was no exception," said North Duplin coach Heather Best, whose team played its fourth five-set match against conference opposition.

"Unfortunately, for us, we came out on the losing end of this game. We made some mistakes and we know what they are. Now we've got to pick ourselves up, improve our game and get ready for the next match."

Each team begins second-half conference play Thursday afternoon.

Spring Creek (9-3, 2-3 CC) entertains Princeton, which dropped a three-set match Tuesday at league-leading Rosewood. North Duplin (6-3, 3-2) attempts to snap its two-game skid at North Johnston.

Chargers fall

Wayne Country Day continued its struggles against Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A opponents with a 17-25, 14-25, 24-26 loss against Rocky Mount Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

The Chargers (7-7) fell to 2-5 in the CPIC.

Erin Taylor and Stephanie Sykes each had four kills for Wayne Country Day. Taylor finished with a team-high four aces, while Sammy Schurhammer added two aces and two digs.

Ashley Clark provided three aces, two assists and three digs.

Wayne Country Day is the guest of Oxford Orphanage on Thursday afternoon.

LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Brittany Sanders pounded 18 kills in the Hawks' 19-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-16, 16-14 win at home over Greene Central.

Kayla Sutton was 22-of-22 from the service line, while Conner Jordan was 25-of-27 with six kills. Brynne Fulghum finished 21-of-23 from the line.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Unbeaten North Duplin dropped the opening set, but rebounded for a 23-25, 25-23, 25-19 victory over Spring Creek in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Heather Hudson and Vanessa Lynch combined for 13 aces and each collected two kills for the Rebels. Kayla Myers added one kill, two digs and five aces.

Samantha Cates served five aces.

Tasha Whitfield led Spring Creek with four aces before leaving the match with a sprained ankle. Whitfield also recorded two aces along with Ashley Barwick.

Jordan Coor had four aces.

North Duplin (9-0, 5-0 CC) travels to North Johnston on Thursday, while Spring Creek (6-4, 3-2) plays host to Princeton.

LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Casey Harrison was 10-of-10 from the service line with four kills in the Hawks' 25-14, 25-17 win at home over Greene Central.

Shanique Thomas finished 10-of-11 from the line, while Engoli Mason added three kills. The Hawks (8-5, 2-2 Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference) travel to Farmville Central today.

Gators secure

Carolina 1-A match

SELMA -- Spring Creek's Paula Webber and Janelle Archer each fired a 47 to lead the Gators to a team score of 94 and a win in Class 1-A Carolina Conference play on Wednesday at the Cardinal Country Club.

North Johnston followed with a 102, while Princeton shot 120.

Amber Grady finished with a 45 to take medalist honors for the Panthers.

Kortland Stanfield shot a 51 to lead the Bulldogs.

Spring Creek hosts Princeton next Wednesday at Walnut Creek.

Keller Williams Golf

GREENVILLE -- In a Keller Williams golf event played Sept. 24 at Ironwood Golf Course, Goldsboro's Robert Blair fired a 72, good for second overall in the A Flight. The next Keller Williams event is at River Bend in New Bern on Oct. 8.
