West blanks East in All-Star event

GREENSBORO (AP) -- The West scored 23 points in the final 7:28 of the second quarter and registered the second-most lopsided victory in the 57-year history of the North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star football game, 40-0 over the East.
Polk County's Daniel McEntyre had a 62-yard punt return for a touchdown ignited the West's offensive fireworks and propelled the team to the biggest victory margin since 1954, when the West won 41-0.
The West scored touchdowns on five consecutive possessions starting with McEntyre's punt return.
The West went ahead 9-0 on a safety with 5:46 remaining in the half and got a pair of rushing touchdowns in the final 1:51.
Quarterback Alex Good of Southern Guilford, a Carson-Newman signee, capped a 10-play, 55-yard drive with a seven-yard TD run.
Elon-bound quarterback Bo Williamson of Burlington Cummings ran 57 yards to score as time expired.
With 9:55 to play in the third quarter, linebacker Anthony Levine of Winston-Salem Reynolds scooped up a fumble by East quarterback Ryan McManus of Greenville Conley and scored from 18 yards out for a 30-0 West lead.
Jamelle Cuthbertson, a fullback at Charlotte Harding, scored on a four-yard run with 5:59 left in the third quarter to give the West a 37-0 lead.
The West's Benjamin Hartman of North Davidson kicked a 38-yard field goal with 4:08 for the final score.
Charles B. Aycock's Shonte Barnes participated for the East squad.

Brooke Eason won play of the day, which was most-of-a-kind. Low gross honors went to Faye Franklin, while Evelyn Rose had low net and Charlotte Campbell posted low putts.

Bass Club
The Hawg Breath Bass Club held a tournament on the Chowan River July 16. It was the first tournament of the year, and Doug Vaughn teamed with Howard Modlin to take the win. Second place went to Bill Thompson and third went to Lou Cook and Jon Debevec Jr. Modlin also picked up big fish honors. The next tournament will be Aug. 20 at Kerr Lake.
