Post 11 wins again

EDENTON -- On a cool, breezy evening, the Wayne County Post 11 offense, which had been operating on all cylinders as of late, nearly came to a grinding halt.

Fortunately for the visitors, the pitching and defense didn't.

Jes Snyder drove in the tiebreaking run with two out in the ninth Monday night as Area I East leader Wayne squeaked by Edenton Post 40 2-1 at Hicks Field to move to 8-1 in league play and 12-2 overall. Wayne County will play at home against Kinston today at 7 p.m. at Mount Olive College.

Wayne had scored 55 runs in its previous three games, but struggled mightily against Luke Williford. The right-hander went the distance, allowing five hits and four walks and was his team's main contributor at the plate.

The Wayne offense never found its groove, hit into two double plays and left the bases loaded in the eighth.

But things finally came together in the ninth.

Austin Hood drew a leadoff walk on a full count and advanced to second on a perfect bunt down the first base line by Matthew Holloman. Williford snagged a hard hit ball back to the mound for the second out and then faced Snyder. The count went to 2-2 before Snyder drove a fastball into center field for the go-ahead run.

Reliever Michael Sigmon made it interesting in the bottom of the inning. He retired the first two batters, but then hit John Layton in the helmet with a fastball. Landon Jordan singled through the left side of the infield to put the tying run in scoring position. But Sigmon got David Dail on a called third strike to end the game.

Wayne scored first with a run in the second. Hood walked, went to second on a groundout and scored on a one-out double by Jeffreys into the left field corner. Edenton tied it in the sixth against winner Jesse Lancaster. Williford walked with two out, stole second and came home on Zack Beasley's groundball single to center.

Airlon Vinson got his first mound start for Post 11 and went five innings, allowing one hit while walking four.

At the plate, Lancaster finished 1-for-3, Jackson Massey was 1-for-4, Bennett Jeffreys went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Snyder was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Will Spence went 1-for-4 with a double.
