GREENSBORO -- The Wayne County Gems finished second in 16-under North Carolina AAU Girls Basketball Division II play recently.

The Gems are now qualified to enter the National AAU Division II Tournament to be held July 13-20 in Orlando, Fla. at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.

Earlier in June in Kinston, the Gems won the North Carolina State Games East Regional Championship in the 18-under girls basketball division. They were awarded gold medals for the accomplishment of the best team in their age group in Eastern North Carolina.

The Gems went unbeaten during the two-day event and will now compete in Cary on June 24-26 at the North Carolina State Games Championships.

Members of the Gems -- Chantel Gaines, Quaneisha Milner, Lela Reid and Keyata Pettiford (C.B. Aycock); Jasmine McLamb, Alicia Stevens, Yasmine Washington, Alysa Artis (Eastern Wayne); Mikeda Graham, Carmille Early (Goldsboro); Shanita Monroe (Rosewood), Tiara Broadie (Wayne Country Day) abd Rejess Marshall (Smithfield -Selma).

Double Century

Seventeen bicyclists completed the Seyboro Cyclist's Third Annual Double Century (200 miles) on Saturday.

Local finishers included Chuck Hand, Calvin Ford, Ralph Benedetto, Bobby Baker, Eric Olson, Bob Kinne, and Dave Galloway.

Seven members of the Cross Creek Cycling Club in Fayetteville also finished the ride; Furman Hammonds, Leona O'Berry, Jamie Cheney, Jeff Lorenzen, Dave Allen, Mary Florian and Tom Florian. Other finishers were Ed Frantz from Clayton, Scott Swaringen from Raleigh, and Mike Straseski from Carthage.

Hammonds and Galloway are three-time finishers of the double century, while Ford, Hand, O'Berry, Cheney, and Swaringen have finished the ride twice in the past.

Riders spent 11 hours and 23 minutes in the saddle, averaging 17.7 mph. Their route covered major portions of Wayne, Johnston, Lenoir and Greene Counties. The riders traveled near or through the towns of Goldsboro, Smithfield, Kenly, Pikeville, LaGrange, Kinston, Hugo, Hookerton, and Snow Hill.

Other cyclists and their mileage totals; Steve Desrochers (165 miles), Marvin Harrell (155), Hal O'Berry (155), Tom Bradshaw (120), Bessie Fontenot (120), Phil Pelletier (120), Charles Royal (120), Mike Elliott (100), Scott Summers (65), Nick Galloway (65), Orlando Bermudez (65) and C.C. Wilkins (65).

Rick Sessions, Carol Branch, Luke Baker, Steven Bertrand, Karen Baker, Keith Hines, and Al Brantley joined the riders during the last portion of the ride and provided some much needed moral support to the tired cyclists.

Hole-in-one

Bill Lamm received an unexpected birthday present while playing a round of golf Monday morning at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. The 76-year-old carded an ace -- the third of his career -- on the par 3, 130-yard 16th hole.

He used an 8-iron.

Witnessing the event were playing partners Bill Charlton and W.D. Griffin.

Ladies Golf

Faye Franklin won the play of the day while Gaye Bryant won low gross and Dot Julian took low net. Low putts was claimed by Evelyn Rose. State play day was won by Julian.

Keller Williams Golf

At the Goldsboro Country Club on June 18, Goldsboro's Kevin Harrington finished first in the A Flight.

J.T. Taylor, also of Goldsboro, took second in the B Flight.

The next Keller Williams event is scheduled for July 9 at Cotton Valley in Tarboro.

Hawg Breath

Bass Club

The Hawg Breath Bass Club held its annual two-day tournament on June 18 and 19 on Lake Gaston. In the final tournament of the year, Bill Thompson teamed up with Jim Chafin to bring in over 23 pounds of fish to the scales. Second place went to Ray Burrell and third went to Doug Vaughn and John Walsh. On Saturday, Brian Millhorn took big fish honors with John Walsh catching the big one on Sunday. The next tournament will be held on July 16 on the Chowan River.
