Lancaster hurls one-hitter for Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Julia Lancaster struck out eight against two walks in four innings of work in the Golden Falcons 13-0 win at home over West Craven on Friday.

Lancaster allowed just one hit, while Jenny Jackson came on to strike out the side in the top of the fifth, also giving up one hit.

The win improves Aycock (14-3 overall) to 9-1 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference, heading into a road game on Tuesday at West Carteret. The Falcons currently lead South Central by percentage points for first place in the ECC with the two conference contenders squaring off next Friday in Pikeville.

Aycock has won the last two league titles.

Offensively, Jazzmine Lee, Rusti Talton and Jackson posted two hits each. Talton contributed three RBI, while Lee tripled twice and Jackson scored three times. Lindsey Lowe knocked in two runs as Brittani Edgerton, Kandace Burroughs, Ashley Morris and Chrissy Setliff contributed one RBI each.

Holly White got the loss for West Craven (2-14, 2-9 ECC).

NJ drops Princeton

KENLY -- North Johnston's Candace Evans struck out 11 and gave up just one hit in the Panthers' 8-0 win at home against Princeton on Friday.

Evans yielded a lead-off single to start the second, then retired 16-of-17 batters in the final five innings.

The win improves the Panthers (12-2) to a perfect, 9-0 in Class 1-A Carolina Conference play with three games left.

Robyn Creech paced North Johnston with two hits and four RBI, while teammates Amanda Pope, Hannah Ellis and Michelle Fisher contributed two hits each.

Princeton (4-9 overall) fell to 3-7 in Carolina play heading into a May 6 meeting with Farmville Central at home.

North Johnston hosts Rosewood on Monday.

A-G tops Rebels

CALYPSO -- Ayden-Grifton's Allison Frazier picked up the pitching win and drove in two runs at the plate in the Chargers' 7-2 win at North Duplin on Friday.

The Chargers (11-4 overall) improved to 8-1 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference. North Duplin (8-6 overall) fell to 4-6 against league foes.

Deanna Keyes had two hits for Ayden-Grifton, which hosts Spring Creek on Tuesday.

Jessica Pridgen got the loss on the mound for North Duplin.

North Duplin travels to Farmville Central on Tuesday.

Baseball

Sutton key for NL

LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Brandon Sutton struck out 10 against only two walks as the Hawks pulled into a three-way tie at the top of the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference standings with a 3-0 win over Greene Central on Friday.

Sutton yielded just three hits in six innings of work and struck out four of the final six batters he faced.

The win improved the Hawks (15-3 overall) to 5-2 in the EPC as SouthWest Edgecombe and South Lenoir also have identical league marks with three games left.

Taylor Ginn posted a two-run home run in the fifth for North Lenoir, while Alex McGaughey added two hits and one RBI. Hunter Chase, Travis Rouse and Matthew Whitley got the lone hits for the Rams.

Blake Taylor picked up the loss for Greene Central (10-8 overall), which dipped to 3-4 against league foes.

The Rams host SouthWest Edgecombe on Tuesday, while the Hawks entertain North Pitt.

Princeton keeps lead

KENLY -- Princeton's Dustin Myers tossed 4 1/3 innings, picking up the win in the Bulldogs 5-2 victory at county rival North Johnston on Friday.

Princeton (15-4 overall) boosted its Carolina 1-A Conference-leading record to 8-2 with two games left in league play. The Bulldogs have conference games left with Farmville Central and Rosewood -- both also in the hunt for the league's two playoff spots.

Josh Thompson got the save in relief for Princeton. Ashley Moore endured the loss for North Johnston (4-11, 2-7 CC).

EW falls on road

WILMINGTON -- Ben Bayless delivered the game-winning hit with no outs as New Hanover survived Eastern Wayne 4-3 in a nine-inning, non-conference contest Friday evening.

Tied at 3-3, the Wildcats' Brad Mincey led off the ninth with a single and advanced to third on Ryan Miller's double. Bayless, hitless in his previous four at-bats, plated Mincey with a single.

New Hanover avenged a 4-0 defeat to the Warriors on Thursday.

Senior infielder Jesse Lancaster belted a solo home run, his second of the season, in the third inning. The Warriors, of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference, added two more in the fifth.

Billy McKinley started on the mound for Eastern Wayne and scattered four hits in a five-inning stint. A costly defensive miscue allowed New Hanover to pull within 3-2 in the fifth.

"We made an error that didn't help in the fifth at all," Eastern Wayne coach Jabo Fulghum said. "It would have been the third out and they capitalized on it. If we had played good defense, we would have ended that game in seven innings."

Reliever Michael Mintz encountered trouble in the sixth and Fulghum called Airlon Vinson to the mound. Vinson struck out the side to avoid any damage and Fulghum felt confident Eastern Wayne would keep its lead.

However, a failed pick-off attempt kept the Wildcats alive and led to the game-tying run on a fielder's choice in the seventh.

Ryan Coleman earned the mound win in relief of starter Jason Windham. Windham allowed all three runs (two earned) on 10 hits and struck out nine in eight innings. Coleman threw a perfect ninth.

Tyler Mitchell emerged the Warriors' top batter with three hits, including a double, in four plate appearances. Tyler Ham added two hits and an RBI in four at-bats.

Mincey led New Hanover with two hits.

Eastern Wayne (11-7) entertains ECC foe Goldsboro at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

ND dealt defeat

CALYPSO -- Ayden-Grifton's Hunter Carnes finished with a home run and four RBI and was one of four Chargers with two hits in a 11-1 win at North Duplin on Friday.

Carnes also picked up the pitching win, striking out four in five innings of work.

The victory keeps Ayden-Grifton (14-5 overall) in the hunt for one of the Class 1-A Carolina Conference playoff spots as the Chargers have a 6-3 league mark. The Rebels (6-10 overall) fell to 2-8 against league foes.

Mike Eubanks, Josh Wilson and Jeronnie Gay added two hits each for Ayden-Grifton.

Matthew Braswell got the loss on the mound for North Duplin, which travels to Farmville Central on Tuesday.

The Chargers host Spring Creek on Tuesday.

Jags top Gators

FARMVILLE -- Farmville Central's Jordan Corbett gave up just two hits in four innings of work and picked up the win in the Jaguars' 4-1, Carolina 1-A Conference victory against Spring Creek on Thursday.

Devin Graves went the full, six innings on the mound for the Gators -- striking out four against one walk. Graves gave up four earned runs and eight hits.

Spence Albritton, Craven Taylor and Brandon Cox posted two hits each for Farmville (12-7, 6-3 CC).

Spring Creek (6-13, 4-6) travels to Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.

Golf

Eagles sweep quad

CARY -- Wayne Christian's Jonathan Greene fired a 36 to take medalist honors as the Eagles finished 16-0 in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference after a winning a four-team match at Preston Wood in Cary on Thursday.

The Eagles are currently ranked No. 1 in the N.C. Independent Schools 1-A classification.

Wayne Christian (18-3 overall) shot 156 as a team, while Cresset Christian took second at 166. Cary Christian (171) and Cape Fear (186) rounded out the team scoring.

Matt Davis and Andrew Radford shot 38 and 39, respectively for the Eagles, while teammates Chad Smith (43), Clark Rose (44) and Hayden Gardner (44) also contributed.

The CCC tournament will be held on Monday at Walnut Creek.

JV baseball

Saints tally victory

MOREHEAD CITY -- Southern Wayne had five players with two hits each and banged out 14 hits in an 11-6 win at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe West Carteret on Friday.

Chris Massey had two hits and two RBI, while Dave Overman doubled twice and drove in one. Ricky Oddon and Byron Powell had two hits and an RBI each as teammate Chris Capps added two singles.

Cameron Wiggins picked up the win on the mound for the Saints, who host Washington in a doubleheader on Tuesday. Overman came on to toss the final three innings.
