WARSAW -- James Kenan gets tougher as the season gets shorter.
The Tigers made quick work of once-beaten Spivey's Corner Midway Friday night, taking down the Raiders 38-6 at Bill Taylor Field in an important Class 1-A Super Six Conference matchup.
The victory puts Kenan at 2-0 in league play and 7-1 overall, keeping pace with Wallace-Rose Hill for the Super Six lead. Midway fell to 1-1 in conference and 5-2 overall.
The Tigers, ranked seventh in the latest N.C. High School Athletic Association prep football poll, set the tone with the opening kickoff as Ronnie Williams blew through the Raiders for an 88-yard touchdown return. Later in the period Kelvin Miller found Matt Bass for the first of two touchdown passes, this one covering 30 yards, to give the Tigers a 16-0 lead.
After Midway put a score on the board to get to within 10 points at 16-6, Kenan struck for two more scores before the half. Miller threw a pair of scoring strikes, to Jason Kennion for 37 yards and to Bass for 17 yards, which essentially put the game out of reach.
Bass led the receiving corps with five catches for 54 yards and a pair of scores, while Kennion caught four for 57 yards and a touchdown. Miller connected on 13-of-19 for 155 yards.
Kenan's defense shut the door on Midway, allowing just 142 yards of offense and 42 yards rushing.
Derrick Wilson rounded out the scoring in the fourth quarter by blocking his second punt of the night and covering it in the end zone for a touchdown. Wilson also had seven tackles for Kenan.
Also standing out defensively for the Tigers were Alonzo Washington (4 tackles, interception), Tyreck Dunn (2 tackles, interception), Montrell Outlaw (5 tackles), Reco Peterson (5 tackles, three for loss), Leron Boykin (4 tackles), Michael Lewis (3 tackles), Tim Faison (3 tackles) and Derrick Highsmith (tackle, pass breakup).
The Tigers host Hobbton on Friday.
