Kinston, Frederick washed out

FREDERICK, Md. -- Rain washed out Tuesday's contest between Kinston and Frederick, and both teams will make up the game with a doubleheader today.

In game one, K-Tribe left-hander Derrick Van Dusen is scheduled to throw against Keys right-hander Hayden Penn.

Fan favorite Brian Slocum gets the nod for Kinston in game two, while left-hander Richard Stahl will throw for Frederick.

Kinston won the Southern Division's first-half title.

Magness, Lowery chosen

PHILADELPHIA -- The Sports Network has tabbed Kinston outfielder Pat Magness and Wilmington right-hander Devon Lowery the Carolina League Player of the Week ending July 25th.

The 26-year old Magness batted .417 last week, with three home runs and 11 RBI. He was among leaders in slugging percentage (.875) and on-base-percentage (.500) and went 10-for-24 for the week.

Magness had just recently joined the Indians and has hit safely in eight of the nine games he has played. He opened his week with three three hits against Frederick, one of which was a homer, and drove in three runs. He followed that up with back-to-back two hit games against the Keys, drilling a homer in each game and driving in seven runs combined. Two nights later he had a two hit game against Potomac banging a home run and driving in two runs.

Magness has been on fire since joining the Indians, hitting .361 with three homers and 15 RBI overall in 36 at-bats.

The 21-year old Lowery went 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA last week. He allowed just two earned runs and 12 hits in 122Ú3 innings of work, striking out seven and walking seven last week, holding opponents to a .255 batting average.

Lowery surrendered just two earned runs and seven hits spread over 52Ú3 innings against Myrtle Beach last week, but was not involved in the decision. The right-hander struck out three and walked three batters as the BlueRocks won 7-6.

Saturday night, Lowery allowed just five hits in a complete-game victory in the first game of a double-header with Lynchburg. He fanned four and walked four batters in raising his record above .500 at 7-6.
