Betsy Frederick, a third-generation member of the athletic Frederick family of Goldsboro, has been named to the EA Sports All-American Girls Soccer Team.
Betsy, a rising senior at Broughton High School in Raleigh, is also a member of the North Carolina high school All-Star Soccer Team.
She is the daughter of Goldsboro native Ron Frederick and his wife Prudy of Raleigh. Her father played baseball and football at Goldsboro High School and later was a standout wide receiver on the Duke University football team and played in the pros.
Her paternal grandparents are Bob and Joyce Frederick. Bob Frederick played varsity football at Wake Forest University. Betsy is also the granddaughter of Durwood and Catherine Tyndall of Goldsboro.
Along with his three brothers, Bob Frederick is a member of the singing Fredericks, a widely known quartet of ex-athletes.
The other brothers are Carlton of Goldsboro, who played football and baseball at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Don of Goldsboro, who played football at UNC-Chapel Hill, and Larry of Raleigh, who was a Wake Forest football player.
In 2001, the Fredericks were awarded the first Robert B. Jamieson Notable Names Award by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recognizing athletic accomplishments in high school and college by North Carolinians.
As a sophomore, Betsy Frederick helped Broughton High School win the state 4-A soccer championship in 2002. Last year, the team again advanced to the championship game.
EA Sports, the sports software brand that picks high school All-America squads, selected her as one of the top 20 high school players in the country. Betsy was the only honoree from North Carolina.
Carlton Frederick's granddaughter, Sarah Winslow of Wilson, plays on the Fike High School soccer team and was the leading high school scorer in the state last year.
