Wayne Junior Legion sweeps Rocky Mount

DUDLEY -- Wayne County's Junior American Legion team closed divisional play with a doubleheader sweep of Rocky Mount Wednesday, winning 4-1 in the first game and taking the second of the twinbill 5-4 at Southern Wayne High School.

The wins improved Post 11 to 15-2 overall as the division champions finished 11-1 in division play and will open the first round of the Eastern Division playoffs at home Saturday night against Rocky Mount. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

In the first game, Wayne County's John Yates had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run as Joseph Davis also added an RBI. Joey Moye doubled. Post 11 scored three of its four runs in the first inning.

Justin Williams picked up the win in five innings of work, yielding only one run on five hits. Williams had six strikeouts against three walks.

Evan Cavanaugh tossed the final two innings, giving up no runs.

Game two saw Wayne County's Taylor Sutton pick up the win on the mound, yielding four runs on three hits in four innings.

Sutton helped his cause with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

Tyler Ham added two hits, delivering a double and an RBI. Chris Brown supplied an RBI, while Joey Moye had a double.

In relief of Sutton, Billy McKinley gave up no runs on two hits in three innings, notching four strikeouts.

Wayne County ends the regular season tonight at Southern Wayne High School, taking on Northern Nash.

Wayne County, Aycock, Snow Hill and Rocky Mount emerged as playoff qualifiers for the 32-team Junior Legion State Tournament. The four teams will go head-to-head, with the first two teams to win two games advancing to the second round.

WASHINGTON -- Hunter Chase had a perfect 4-for-4 effort at the plate with a double, triple and three RBI as Snow Hill's Junior Legion team defeated Tri-County 10-6 at Washington High School on Wednesday.

The win improved Post 94 to 12-8 overall and 8-4 in division play. Snow Hill will open up the first round of the Eastern Division playoffs at Aycock at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Tyler Chase and Lance Murray added two hits each for Post 94.

Jordan Corbett tallied the win on the mound.

is rained out

WILLIAMSTON -- Snow Hill's Senior American Legion contest with Martin County was rained out on Wednesday and the non-division game will not be rescheduled.

Post 94 returns to action tonight at Kinston with a re-match with Kinston scheduled for Friday at Snow Hill. Both teams are currently tied for fourth place in the Area One East South Division with 3-5 marks.

Snow Hill owns the tie-breaker with Kinston and needs a split with Post 43 to qualify for the postseason that is set to begin July 12. Kinston has to have a sweep to qualify.

This week, Novella Zambelli won low gross while Sue Wilson took low net. Gaye Braynt emerged the winner in low putts.

July and August pairings will begin at 8:30 a.m. with tee-times at 9 a.m.

Correction

It was incorrectly stated in Wednesday's report on the Wayne County and Kinston Senior American Legion game that Jesse Lancaster and Jes Snyder had four RBI between them. Snyder (four RBI) and Lancaster (two RBI) combined to drive in six runs.
