Eugene Norman

Goldsboro High School baseball player Eugene Norman was selected to take part in the Blue-Gray Classic National Battle of the States games August 27-29 in Orlando, Florida.

Norman, a rising senior at Goldsboro High, tried out at Guilford College earlier this month and was invited to play for the North Carolina team late last week. The games will be played at the Houston Astros spring training facility and will feature 300 of the top baseball prospects in the country.

Norman was nominated to try out for the team. At Guilford, he worked out as a shortstop and as a pitcher in front of scout Gus Spell.

Norman said he would probably miss a few days of school to take the trip.

"I'm pretty excited," Norman said. "They sent me a 15-page letter explaining everything."

Norman was the baseball MVP for the Cougars this past season, hitting .260 and stealing five bases. His pitching ERA was 3.39.

Aycock juniors

fall to Wilson

PIKEVILLE -- The Aycock American Junior Legion baseball team battled back through the latter stages against Wilson, but fell 18-15 on the Charles B. Aycock diamond Tuesday evening.

Wilson led 16-4, but Aycock scored 11 runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined.

"I was very pleased with how our kids battled back," Aycock coach Ed Spence said.

Will Spence paced Aycock's offense with three hits and two RBI in five plate appearances. Cameron Boswell doubled twice in three at-bats and drove in three runs. Jackson Massey batted 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Derek Lancaster contributed two hits, while Bradley Taylor added a double.

Brandon Price worked three innings and suffered the pitching loss. Brandon Edgerton pitched the fourth and Massey threw the final three innings.

The teams combined for 30 hits.

Aycock (10-3, 4-3) entertains Tri-County East at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Snow Hill tops

Wayne County juniors

SNOW HILL -- Richie Turner struck out eight Wayne County hitters and went the distance as Snow Hill's American Junior Legion team beat Wayne County 4-3 Tuesday night.

Turner allowed six hits and walked just two, and he drove in two runs at the plate. Tyler Chase went 3-for-4 for Snow Hill, while Craven Taylor had a double and Hunter Chase and an RBI.

Joseph Davis took the loss for Wayne County, giving up sevne hits and striking out four. Joey Moye had a hit and a stolen base for Wayne County, while Tyler Ham ahd a run-scoring hit, Taylor Sutton and T.J Hinson both doubled and John Yates had a hit.

Snow Hill (7-6, 3-2) will travel to Rocky Mount for a game Friday.

Wayne County (7-2, 2-1) will be home to take on Northern Nash tonight and travels to Washington on Thursday.

Babe Ruth

15 and under

Southern Wayne 7, Fremont 1 -- Jeremy Hargrove gave up just three hits in four innings and srtruck out five to get the win, Dave Overman and Josh Brannan had doubles to pace Southern Wayne.

Southern Wayne 11, Rosewood 3 -- Jeremy Harvgrove picked up the win by alowing one earned run in five innings, Josh Brannan closed out the game wirh three hits over the last two innings. Ricky Oddon had a pair of hits, while Brannan had a double and three hits. Byron Powell had two hits, one a double, and Hargrove and Andrew Bass each had two hits for Southern Wayne. Holt Rains had a double and a triple for Rosewood.

Walnut Creek

Ladies Golf

Hanny Cornella won the Play of the Day tournament.

Gaye Bryant emerged the low gross winner. Sue Wilson won low net, while Betty Holloway won low putts.

Linda Cannon and Joyce Reynolds will be the tournament chairmen for July.
