This weekend, some of the best amateur golfers in Wayne County will be teeing it up in the Wayne County Amateur Tournament.
Before they get started, however, the future of local golf is on display today.
Some 44 young golfers took to the links at the Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course to take part in the 2004 Wayne County Junior Amateur tournament. Boys and girls from ages eight to 18 are taking part, challenging the Goldsboro layout to try and become the best in their age group.
This is the first time in the history of the four-year event that Goldsboro Municipal has hosted the tournament. The host course rotates from year to year among the area golf courses.
The festivities began Tuesday night as all the competitors were treated to a golf clinic by the staff at Goldsboro Municipal.
Tournament play began this morning as five divisions of competition opened play. The boys 8-9 year old division played only nine holes, while the other divisions -- boys 12-13, boys 14-15, girls 13-18 and boys 16-18 -- played a full 18 holes.
Afterwards, the competitors were treated to lunch before the award presentation.
Just three girls are in the field after last year's champion, Lindsay Snyder, aged out of the competition. Eastern Wayne's Kristen Freeman headlines the group.
In the boys 16-18 group, several area prep golfers are taking part. Charles B. Aycock golfers Dustin Smith, Brandon Campbell and defending champion Ernie Campbell are in the field, along with Eastern Wayne's Robert Garris and Wayne Christian's Jonathan Greene.
Sixteen golfers are in the boys 14-15 year old field.
A complete story on the results and the winners of the tournament will be in Thursday's News-Argus.
