ROCKY MOUNT -- Northeast Academy exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning and eliminated Wayne Christian 10-0 from the 2004 N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs.
Wayne Christian, the No. 12 seed, concluded its season 8-6.
Northeast (9-10) fell in the next round to fourth-seeded Faith Christian of Rocky Mount by an 11-0 count. Faith Christian advanced to this weekend's final four along with top-seeded Lawrence Academy, Halifax Academy and Albemarle.
Halifax is the defending state champion.
The Eagles shut down Northeast in the opening inning, but allowed three runs (two unearned) over the next three innings. Northeast finished off the Eagles in the fifth after Wayne Christian pitcher Brittany Sullivan left the game due to an injury.
Sullivan notched three strikeouts and surrendered four hits, one in each inning.
"(We) were in the game and will use this to build on for next year," Wayne Christian coach Roger Longwell said. "We wanted to play because we think we were competitive with anyone else up for a state bid."
