Despite out-shooting Washington 13-4 on the game, Eastern Wayne gave up an "own goal" on a deflection in the 23rd minute of the first half as the Pam Pack emerged with a 1-0 win at New Hope on Wednesday.

The loss drops Eastern Wayne (5-6 overall) to 5-4 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference as the Warriors will take on non-conference opponent Havelock on Friday at 7 p.m.

Washington (10-5-1 overall) improved to 5-2 in conference play.

"To give up an own goal is always unfortunate, but it did not stop the forward flow of play for us," Eastern Wayne coach Jorg Wagner said. "If anything, I saw our players get even more determined after that."

Eastern Wayne's Natalie Taylor and Samantha Frazer had a handful of deep attacks in the final 10 minutes, but never came away with a goal.

"Although our clear advantage in shots on goal did not translate into a win, the girls showed marked improvement and sooner or later wins will inevitably follow," Wagner said.

Wagner praised goalie Ashley Lish and defender Sarah Bacon for their defensive efforts, while applauding Katy Biehl, Christina Fanto and Leanna Rothwell at midfield.
