Softball -- SW falls to South Central

WINTERVILLE -- South Central pushed over single runs in three innings and came away with a 3-1 softball victory against Southern Wayne in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday.
The Falcons (12-3, 9-1 ECC) got their first run in the second.
Mary Beth Boltinhouse reached on a fielder's choice and Beth Bradley walked. Tabitha Thompson reached on an error, loading the bases and Sarah Robero walked, forcing in the run.
What proved the difference came in the second. Katie Holloman, Jessie Odom and Jennifer Joyner all singled, loading them up. Boltinhouse hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Holloman.
Southern Wayne (6-9, 4-4 ECC) avoided the shutout in the sixth.
Scarlett Joyner reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Then, on a delayed steal, Joyner attempted to take third and knocked the ball from the defender's glove. She jumped up and ran home.
Haley Fail led the Saints with two hits in three plate appearances. Karen Thornton, who suffered the pitching loss, contributed one hit along with Rachel Reynolds and Dominique Williams.
The Saints travel to Washington on Thursday and entertain county rival C.B. Aycock on Friday.
