K-Tribe takes pair from Cannons

KINSTON -- The Kinston Indians took a pair from the Potomac Cannons Wednesday at Grainger Stadium, claiming game one 5-2 and rolling in the nightcap by a final of 11-4.

The Indians moved to 5-0 on the year, while Potomac dropped to 1-4.

Kinston led wire-to-wire in game one, using three home runs to power the victory. Ryan Garko got things going in the bottom of the first, sending an admittedly wind-aided drive over the wall in right for a quick 2-0 lead.

After Potomac cut the lead in half in the third, Michael Aubrey pushed the margin back to two with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. J.J. Sherrill added a solo homer in the fourth, and Pat Osborn crushed the first pitch of the sixth inning over the wall in right to account for the final score.

Fausto Carmona (1-0) earned the win as he allowed just one run and two hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out eight.

Potomac looked to reverse things in the second game, and used a two-run double by Jason Vavao in the first to grab an early 2-0 lead.

Kinston got a run back in the bottom of the frame on Garko's RBI double to the wall, and Eider Torres tied it in the second with his first RBI of the year. A fielder's choice by Nathan Panther put Kinston ahead 3-2, and Aubrey then completely changed the momentum by socking a three-run bomb to left that everyone in the park knew was gone as soon as the ball left the bat.

The Indians added on four runs in the fourth, highlighted by back-to-back singles by Osborn and Jonathan van Every for a 10-3 lead.

That was more than enough for starter Keith Ramsey (1-0), who settled down after the first inning and allowed just one hit in his final four innings. He allowed three runs on three hits in five innings, walking two and striking out six.

The Indians and Cannons conclude their series today at 7 p.m.

Douglas arrives

in Kinston; Martin heads for Lake County

KINSTON--Pitcher Shea Douglas was promoted to Kinston following a brief stint with the Lake County Captains of the South Atlantic League, the K-Tribe announced today.

To make room on the roster for Douglas, pitcher Kevin Martin was sent to Lake County.

Originally a 32nd-round pick in the 2002 draft following a career at the University of Southern Mississippi, Douglas has pitched like a steal in compiling an 8-5 record and 1.38 ERA in 49 career minor league games in 2002 and 2003. He spent the majority of last year in Lake County, going 5-3 with 10 saves and a 1.37 ERA in 34 relief appearances for the Captains. He finished the year by pitching in two games for the Class AA Akron Aeros in the Eastern League. The lefthander was named to the 2003 SAL All-Star team and the USA Today Sports Weekly minor league All-Star team.

Martin will be returning to Lake County after going 1-1 with four saves and a 1.07 ERA in 28 games there last season. The righthander was signed as a free agent after a collegiate career at the University of Southern Colorado. He had not pitched for Kinston this season.
