ROCKY MOUNT -- Third-ranked Wayne Country Day stood tied 2-2 with second-ranked Rocky Mount Academy before falling 4-3 on the road in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play on Wednesday.
It looked as if the Chargers had equalized the game with 1:30 left when Virginia Best knocked in a follow shot that hit the goalkeeper's glove. The goal was negated after a controversial offside penalty as Rocky Mount Academy held on for the win.
Sarah Coleman, Christin Grubb and Louise Northington all had goals, while Grubb dished out an assist.
Ellen Elmore had six saves for the Chargers (5-4, 1-4 CPIC), while Amanda Benton grabbed 16 saves.
Wayne Country Day returns to action on April 20 at home.
