Four first inning errors proved costly for Wayne Country Day as the Chargers hung in with state-ranked Rocky Mount Academy, which claimed a 7-3 win at the Eastern Carolina Athletic Park on Tuesday.

The Eagles scored five runs in the first, but only managed two more the rest of the game against Wayne Country Day freshman Travis Davis. Davis struck out five against no walks and gave up seven runs, only two of which were earned.

The Chargers (2-6) were led by Spenser Briggs with two hits and a stolen base.

"We are not winning ball games, but at least we are in ball games," Wayne Country Day coach Michael Taylor said. "To come out losing 7-3 to that team is good."

The Chargers, winless in four Coastal Plains Independent 1-A outings, return to action at the ECAP on Friday against state-ranked Faith Christian of Rocky Mount.
