Softball -- Burroughs' hit pushes CBA past South Central

PIKEVILLE -- Kandace Burroughs delivered the game-winning in the sixth inning as Charles B. Aycock escaped previously-unbeaten South Central 1-0 in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference action Tuesday.

The Golden Falcons (9-0) remained unbeaten in five league outings and extended their ECC win streak to 19 games. They continue play Friday at county rival Eastern Wayne.

South Central exited 8-1.

The visiting Falcons threatened to score first on the Aycock diamond. But center fielder Brittani Edgerton gunned down a runner at the plate to end the inning.

"I thought we survived a shaky first inning with great defense," Aycock coach David West said. "That play from Brittani to (catcher) April Vick was just textbook -- a great throw, a great block and a great tag."

Aycock pitcher Jenny Jackson (9-0) retired the next 19 batters she faced after the first inning. The junior finished with 11 strikeouts and scattered two hits in a complete-game effort.

The Golden Falcons attempted to break the scoreless tie in the fourth, but came up empty.

West's team threatened in the sixth and appeared to stall again. Jackie Schmidt reached on an error, but remained at first after Aycock failed to execute a pair of sacrifice bunts. Burroughs, the No. 2 hitter in the lineup, stepped into the box and ripped a 1-2 pitch into the left center field gap.

Lyndsay Lowe, Schmidt's courtesy runners, easily crossed the plate for the 1-0 lead.

"I had Lowe stealing on the play, so she got a good jump and was able to score all the way from first base," West said.

Jennifer Willliamson contributed a double and Meredith Wilkerson chipped in a with a single.

South Central pitcher Jessie Odom endured her first pitching loss of the season. The right-handed Odom (8-1) surrendered three hits and picked up just one strikeout in a complete-game performance.

"I told the girls before the game we had to play with twice the intensity that we did against North Lenoir because this was a conference game," West said. "We played tough. This team doesn't show a lot of emotion, but goes right to work."
