Defending 2-A champs dominate Chargers

Kerr-Vance Academy, last year's N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 2-A champion popped Wayne Country Day 19-4 Friday at the Eastern Carolina Athletic Park.

Although the Spartans scored only one run in the opening inning, they sent at least eight hitters to the plate in the next four.

The Chargers gave their guests more than they bargained for during the first two innings. Wayne Country Day batted around in the opening frame. Walks to Sam Steed and Kevin Logan, along with singles by Ryan Ford and Shivar Person, brought in three runs. But, Person, Kevin Herring, and Ben Strickland were left stranded at the end of the inning.

Another rally in the second netted only a solo run as Ford walked, and Travis Davis and Logan singled to drive in Ford.

Another opportunity was missed when Spencer Briggs hit into a double play. "

Another hit or two could have helped us get some more runs," said Chargers' coach Michael Taylor. "But, that's baseball."

The Chargers' youth, missing six starters from last season, and Kerr-Vance's experience was apparent for the remainder of the game.

"We started two eighth and two ninth graders and only one senior tonight," said Taylor.

Wayne Country Day threatened one more time in the fifth as it loaded the bases with one out. Logan walked, while Person reached on an error, and Kevin Herring singled. Kerr-Vance reliever, Robert Bowen, then slammed the door and closed out the game.

The Chargers return to action on Monday afternoon at the ECAP against Greenfield.
