Trojan baseball tean outslugs St. Andrews

LAURINBURG -- Mount Olive needed five runs in the top of the 10th inning to surpass a relentless St. Andrews attack, 16-13, and win the Caro-linas-Virginia Athletics Confer-ence weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Clark Field.

The Trojans (16-6 overall, 6-3 CVAC) grabbed three different leads before extra innings but watched the Knights (11-9, 5-3) come back each time.

Mount Olive broke out to an 11-6 lead going into the seventh inning stretch with runs in five of the first seven innings. St. Andrews fought back scoring two in the eighth and three in the ninth. Everett Kelly drilled his second homer of the game, a two run shot to centerfield to cut the lead to one and Anthony Mehling followed with a solo blast to left-center field to tie the game up at 11-11.

An error in the top of the 10th opened the door for the Trojans as they rattled off five unearned runs on five hits. Jonathan Pullen singled home the first run of the inning and Matt Johnson added a two-run single. St. Andrews kept the game interesting in their half of the inning, loading the bases with no outs. Mehling followed with a two run single up the left side of the infield.

But yesterday's game one winning pitcher, Ricky Duke, ended the threat coming in and retiring all three batters he faced to earn his second save of the season. Blake Montgomery picked up his first win of the season for Mt. Olive while Paul Zehr, the seventh Knight pitcher, took the loss. Pullen led the Trojan attack going 6-for-6 from the plate, all singles.

He also drove in two runs and scored three times. Steve Parrish, Shawn Warner, and T.J. Fly all hit two-run homers for Mount Olive. St. Andrews' Will Clark just missed hitting for the cycle recording four hits including a homer (team high fifth), a triple, and two singles.

Clark scored three times and drove in two. Mehling also connected for four hits, a homer, a double, four RBI, and three runs.

Mount Olive returns to action today as the Trojans begin a two-game series against Shepherd (W. Va.). Game times are 3 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Tuesday at Scarborough Field.
