CBA girls fall at Manteo

MANTEO -- Charles B. Aycock's inside presence is a big key to the success of their girls' basketball team. Conversely, when the Lady Falcons aren't given the opportunity to be physical under the basket, they struggle.

Man-teo made sure their visitors struggled, drawing fouls and getting free-throw opportunities as the Lady 'Skins beat Aycock 59-39 in the opening round of the Class 3-A state basketball playoffs Monday night.

The game began with the Falcons taking an early 5-2 lead against the Skins. But foul trouble plagued Aycock the entire game, and Manteo was able to get back into the game to end the first quarter ahead 12-11.

Manteo got into the bonus in the second period, but Aycock finished the first half ahead 21-19.

The Skins seemed to get their second wind in the third, while the Falcons managed just five points. Again, the Aycock got into foul trouble and before the period was done, the Skins were in the bonus.

Caitlin Andrus, who shot 10-of-14 from the foul line, boosted Manteo to a 19-point third period lead. The Redskins continued to play with intensity and shot well from the foul line, ending the game making 27-of-46 free throws. Conversely, Aycock was just 7-for-19 from the line.

"We are a physical team and we have to be able to work under the basket," said Aycock coach Gary Hales. "We got the rebounds, but we'd miss the shot at the other end and they'd come down and hit one."

As the fourth period progressed, the Falcons continued to play aggressively and were whistled for fouls, helping to extend the Lady 'Skins lead and putting three Manteo players in double-digits. Four Aycock players fouled out of the game.

Andrus led the team with 24, while Kristen Dalton added 12 for the Redskins, and Skyla Lamberto-Egan finished with eight points.

The win marks the second-straight year Manteo has made the second round of the postseason.

Quaneisha Milner had 12 points and Cassandra Worrell had 11 for Aycock.

With the victory, the Redskins (15-10) move on to the second round Wednesday against host Wilson Beddingfield, the number one seed in the Big Eight North Conference.

Aycock, the third seed out of the Eastern Carolina Conference, concluded its season at 17-8. Seniors Worrell, Mary Beth Hooks, Joyce Warrick and Jennifer Williamson played their last games in Lady Falcon uniforms.

"They took us from 9-16 to 17-8," said Hales. "We're gonna miss them. They all stepped up and gave some good leadership."
