HOBBTON -- A pair of old rivals dashed James Kenan's attempt at a pair of upsets over top seeds in the Super Six 1-A Conference tournament championship games Saturday night.

In the boys final, top-seeded Wallace-Rose Hill (23-3) got a pair of quick three-pointers from guard J.T. Carr with just under two minutes left to run a two-point lead to eight and held on for a 72-67 win. One of Carr's clutch threes came on a shot from behind the arc, and the other came on a driving, hanging jump shot from the foul line and a foul shot.

It was the Bulldogs' fifth victory this season over Kenan (14-11), four of them tight, tense battles.

Carr scored nine of his team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter. JK guard Shane Cohen was the game's high scorer with 18.

The Tigers, third-seeded in the tournament, beat Midway 72-61 in the first round and topped host Hobbton 73-60 in the semifinals. Walace--Rose Hill had a first-round bye and routed Union in the semifinals. The Bulldogs ran the table in the Super Six, going 10-0 in the regular season and grabbing their second straight Super Six tournament.

A clutch three-pointer also helped spell the end for the Lady Tigers (15-9). Midway's Lady Raiders (18-6) took the lead with 15 seconds left on a 25-foot three by Martina Bullard and downed the Lady Tigers 54-50.

The girls champions also made it through the season without a conference defeat and won their third Super Six tourney in the league's four years.

Much of the game was a battle between Midway's 6-4 sophomore Lauren Cochran and Kenan's 6-2 senior Sareece Armwood, who got into foul trouble in the first quarter and finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots. Cochran scored 15 of her game-high 26 points in the first half and added 12 rebounds and one block.

Kenan's boys open their playoff quest on Tuesday at home against Rosewood, while the Ladt Tigers will host thhe Coastal Plains Conference's No. 4 seed on Monday at Harmon Gym.
